blown sub?

JBL bp1200.1
fosgate 12" Power hx2
1 cubic inch sealed what fosgate "recommends"

i think i blew my sub.. i wired it to get a 4ohm(yes i'm sure it was 4 ohms, checked 100s of times) so my amp couldnt push anymore then 600wrms..
1st week i set the gains to 1/2.
2nd week set the gains to just a lil over 3/4
3rd week last sat, noticed it wasnt playing a loud/clean
today, sounds like something is loose.. kinda like the dustcap fell off from the sub. it still plays but i hear a real badd 'rattle'.
did i blow the sub? it should be covered under warranty right? i dont see how a 1000wrms sub could take a **** after only seeing 500wrms the most.

thats when the wire thats connected from the terminals to the voice coil hits something right.. cause it does it even at really low volume.. and its not every now n then, its constantly doing it. not during the "boomy" bass but the "rumbling" ones.

Yeah, it sounds like tinsil lead slap. I am very familiar with the sound so I can check it out this weekend and tell you if it is that

For now, you may want to back your gains down a lil, also the slap is usually only noticable when you have your truck open and you are standing right by the trunk...and yes it will sound a lil like a blown sub. Anywayz, Whiterabbit made a good suggetion to me that I have tried, and so far so good, but I have not blasted it yet. Tape a bit of paper towel with E-tape where the lead is hitting the cone and this can help to eliminate the noise. I have the cheapest paper towels at home (not Bounty ) so I have a feeling that i will hear it at loud volumes. Just don't jack your gains all the way up!

I have about my gain set at about 1/2 with Bass boost off and 300 watts to each sub...when I had it set to 3/4s I got bad slap at the last meet, and I blew a fuse

even with the gains down to like 1/4 i could hear it..even with the trunk closed and i'm in the drivers seat i could hear it.. didnt sound too pretty so i just pulled the plug on it... i'll check it when i get home, hopefully it is the tinsel lead slap but i dont think it is..

Two things you can do...Push the sub cone down a lil and slowly with your ear next to it (and the radio off) do you hear any scratchy type noises?
Or you can pull the sub completely out of the box and look at the voice coil and pole piece to see if anything is fried or out of wack.

Also, if you have some thing that reads voltage on you car, or there is one other things that works but I forgot the name (a multimeter) you can check the voltage. If your Voltage is way low then you blew a sub. I think this is how I was able to tell that i blew my first set of Perfects, if I remeber correctly.

Also, make sure all of the screws holding the sub in are tight to the box

I have learned about this problem from having it too many times! Instead of seeing who can bump the loudest, we should crank our gains and see who get the loudest tinsel slap/clipped signal! i wish my friend who came to the McDonald's meet on the Suzuki bike could come to the meet this weekend...he is really good at solving these lil problems.

DizWikedCivic is on a distinguished road
isnt the power hx2 rated at 1000 rms, and you were only running it at 500 rms, wouldnt that pop the subs. i heard that underpower the subs was worst then overpower them

I think that is a myth...that would mean that playing your stereo low would blow you speakers, and that doesn't happen. What could potentially happen is that in order to make up for the lack of power of an amp someone might crank the bass bosst and gain...this would cause the amp to send a clipped signal to the subs, and potentially damage them.
