Front speaker mount fabrication photos
Front speaker mount fabrication photos
Check out my link for some quick photos on my fabrication of the factory speakers. I gutted out the inner portion of the speaker and then removed the 1/4 in. lip on the face of the speaker housing. I then mounted the speaker with the screws provided from Pioneer and purchased the speaker wire adapter kit. Then it was just a quick plugging back of the wire harness and snapped the speaker back into place like a factory speaker. Sounds and looks sweet now! Hope this helps guys and gals out when they perform a search on "front speakers".
Here's the link and let me know if you guys may want or need me to create a more detailed DIY site on this and other topics. Let me know!

Many people I have seen through searches on this forum have either installed smaller speakers and bolted directly to the door... ouch sheet metal screws into your new car door or have installed larger speakers in a somewhat grotesque manner... ugly! Some have needed to make or have made for them custom spacers so as to have the speaker raised high enough away from inside the door so the window can close. I'm just providing some photos to demonstrate that using the factory speaker as a spacer/ mounting unit you can save money, time, and holes in you doors! I guess you can call me dumb...
I have a whole collection of photos from start to finish on the upgrades in speakers on my coupe. It would be like all the other install photos found here. The only difference would be pictures of the fabricated speakers that can just snap back onto the front doors. That's why I just posted up the fabricated speakers and nothing else. I think I'm going to start a detailed DIY site to for myself mainly for archival purposes but also for others to use. I'll announce that soon. Thanks for the interest!
Call me crazy, but why do all that work when you can just buy a 1/2" or 1" spacer at HiFi buys for $15, screw it in the door, and screw your speakers into that? You'll never see them. It'll save time. Its a custom fit. Maybe thats just my opinion. To get my XR650-CSis in the door I had to use the 1" spacer _and_ shave off that plastic ring on the inside of the door panel. Cool mod, though.
1. It saves time and money when you don't have to order spacers.
2. It saves eventual rust formation on your doors from driving sheet metal screws into them.
3. It took all of 10mins to core out the speaker and trim the 1/4 in. lip... not to difficult for those with a dremel or jigsaw.
4. Post was only intended as an added option for front speaker installations.
Seems like I should keep my ideas to myself. They seem to not be acceptable ideas to the masses of of this board.
I'm actually worried about posting pics of the custom refrigerator in the glove box area now...

I drilled into my doors and used spacers... Should I be concerned about the rust long term? This only just occured to me while reading this, and then I glanced out the window to see my car covered top to bottom in salt.
I did the exact same thing you did with my infinity reference speakers. It is really easy, and I'm glad I did it because it makes removing the speakers for what ever reason really simple. I would reccommend this over buying a spacer and drilling as well. I did mine several months ago just never got around to posting picks up or anything, good job! I commend you!

Dups and Corrosion,
You just gave me a solution to my spacer woes. Thanks ! A few questions, was it easy to gut the oem speaker from the mount and can either one of you post the pics of this ? TIA

Well, unfortunately, I don't know if or where the pictures would be and I obviously can't do the process again as the OEM speaker do get ruined in the process. But I basically just took a jigsaw and cut around the inside of the circle around where the speaker was the best that I could and then cut out anything that got left behind. If that made any sense at all.... hopefully somebody else will have pics for you so it will be more clear!

It is funny how every single 7th gen speaker DIY I have ever seen is with Pioneer speakers
Is this some sort of weird coincidence...or is Pioneer the most popular choice for replacement speakers?

You will get a little rust but your car will be sold for scrap before it amts to anything.
It's a good idea to keep from drilling and having to fork out some cash for spacers. I paid 10 bucks for spacers and used those for my quarts.
I considered your idea months ago when I did the install. However, removing my quarts and popping the stocks back in when I sell the car quickly eliminated it. I'd rather not leave my quarts. So, you will have to leave the pioneers (relatively inexpensive so this may be your reasoning) or buy something else to put in when you sell the car.
Lastly, if you can't accept that some people won't agree with what you have to say, don't post.

See my reasoning was similiar to yours, but I have already decided that my next car will have an awesome stereo in it stock so that I won't feel the need to spend any extra money. When my car goes most of upgrades will go with it.

If i had money to spend on an expensive car, i'll most prob have money to spend on a better sound system. so cutting up the OEMs is no biggy. btw, Great DIY! plan to do that next week, and will take pictures of each step!
