Mohawkboom - Comp set vs Coaxial in Kicks

Hey Mohawk....thought I would make a thread out of this instead of PM'ing you so others might learn a thing or two and/or add comments. I have pretty much decided to go with CDT speakers. One of the now discontinued MS-80 8" subs will go in each door in a very tightly sealed enclosure. What I want your feedback on is what would be the disadvantages of using the CDT Eurosport 6.5 braxial in the kicks instead of the 6.5 comp set? One more question...realizing that a lot depends on x-over points, would I notice much difference at all going with the 5.25" braxial (or comp set) over the 6.5"? The 8's in the doors will be used as true subs, not midbass drivers. With that in mind I would think the extra size increase of the 6.5 would be the way to go but I'm not really sure. Holler back...thanks

Okay,

I'll start with the subs. Since they will be in the doors and they are 8" subs. crossing tham at 120hz down with a 12db slope would be perfectly swell for keeping your BUF and non directionality.

For the speaker size go with the 5.25's they have slightly better transient response and will play down to 120hz with ease and cover the majority of the midbass duties.

As for Braxial or components..I'd have to say that there's about a 1% chance you'll notice any difference. With Braxials because there is the rod/bar running ha;f way across the woofer..and the 1" tweeter mid cone it can affeft imaging and soundstage in extremely minute ways, but does offer true pointsourse sound.

For Components. The woofer is 100% Un-obstructed and would have slightly better sound dispersion which equates to better imaging. But the tweeter would be mounted really close, but would not truly be point sourced. This is both good and bad. The good part is..you can adjust the tweeter more indepently or mount it in a different location. (some SQ world champs had tweets in A-pillars and woofers in kicks) Which can work better depending on the acoustics of your car.

What I would very highly suggest is installing an under-dash pad..to aborb sound instead of reflect it off all the hard plastic under the dash. Velour and thick tweed..or even acoustical foam work great, and you never really see the material anyhow. I used acoustical foam and used Velcro strips to hold it on when I had my kicks and it really helped smooth out them harsh focal tweets..

Hope this helps ya!

Cheers
Mohawk

Thanks....lots to think about. The 8" subs in the doors would primarily be used for SQ listening & judging. I'll have some big boys in the back for fun and to make my SPL cap. My concern is whether the 5.25 can give me enough midbass, but I guess a lot of that depends on how good the driver is right? Wouldn't the 5.25 be handling most of the midbass duties at that x-over point?

why not keep the 8's going at all times and bandpass them from 50-120hz, get a good 15 ported for the rear and tuned way low and cross it from 20-50hz

120Hz-300hz is where most midbass is.. crossing in the 80's like many people do is only to get minutes amount of actual bass to come from up front to help with BUF imaging. I had a setup with 8" subs in the doors and 2 12's in the trunk before and 5.25" speakers in the dash. It worked out pretty good, but still didn;t go low enough for some classical music tracks . Mighty expensisive to do though with all the amps and crossovers..

The guys at CDT told me I need to use the MS-80 only as a true sub which it was designed for and not a midbass. It can play very low, just not extremely loud which is not a prob for SQ listening, plus I will have 2. Given that info, what do you think I should do about the 5.25 or 6.5 decision? Does more cone area apply here?

most true subs are designed to play to 150hz

cool...thanks for the info, good stuff. I'm also going to throw a set of tweets in the stock locations with attenuation control just in case I need them to raise the soundstage. The 5.25's will definitely be easier to cram into the kicks so that looks like the way to go. How are your custom kicks coming, got any pics yet?

Just to let everyone know, I've been talking with Q logic and they will have kicks for our cars in the next 45-60 days. He has my name on the contact list and said as soon as they start shipping they'll let me know. I'll keep you posted.
