speakers act up everynow and then

I replaced my stock unit and speakers with blaupunkt head unit and front and rear speakers. everynow and then when I[m am listening to it kinda loud it will start to screw up. it starts ummm "popping" and will kinda go away when i turn it down, but it never happens at a specific time. any ideas? also my speakers get distorted once i get to the top of my volume range 55-65 volume. supposedly an amp can fix this. let me know.

rear speakers 210watt
front 120 watt
45 watts perchannel

thanks,
chris

They are getting distorted because the HU is clipping. Most HU's will clip with the volume control at 75% or more. Even less if you use the bass boost or any other enhansement feature. Yes, an amp will alow you to turn up the volume more without introducing distortion as long as you set it up properly, assuming the speakers can handle more power. By the way, your HU will not put out 45w rms per channel, that is max. Continuous is more like 20-25w rms.

Too much volume, not enough power. Get an amp and like faint said, you wanna take your head unit beyond about 75% of the max volume if that.
