need help for amp
ok, i have 2 jl audio 12in W3 D2 subs. they are 2 ohms and a friend of mine was tellin me i need a big powerful 4 channel amp. is this true??? i know those amps run for a lot so i odn't really want to spend that much. i need to know what kind of amp will be able to handle these subs, like the specs of the amp, or what i need to look for in an amp that will support my 2ohm subs. i don't know that much about audio, please help. thanks a lot
hope this helps crutchfield
No. You need an amp that will power your subs RMS value at 2 ohms. I think the W3's were 300 or 400 watts ( i had the 15w3's but cant remeber). I would look into the Rockford BD500 or the MTX 6500D. Those are the two i can think of off the top of my head.

A class D amp will work and they are a lil cheaper. The are normally stable down to two or one ohm as well. I saw alot of cheap class Ds on woofersetc for good prices.
You have JL subs and you can expect just as much from their amps. I'd go with a 500/1. A little pricy but top quality. Plus, you can run your subs in series, giving a 4-ohm load and no matter what the ohmload is, you'll be getting the same power, these amps are awesome.

2 channel amps are the cheapest amps. Mono amps are the most expensive. I would recommend a class D mono block or a 2 channel amp. I have two 4 ohm 10W3's and they take 250 rms. I'm running it with a MTX 6500D wired at 4 ohms and it's putting out about 450 watts.
You can always find a mono block or 2 channel amp that is bigger than any 4 channel amp. I believe MTX amps are the best amps you can get for their price.
10 and 12W3's should run the same RMS power. I would get any amp that puts out 500 watts rms. You can always go bigger but try not to go under. The reason mine is under RMS power is cause I'm running my subs at 4 ohms.
