Used Amps = Too Much Risk?
I've got a buddy that is supposedly buying 2 Alpine V12 amps from a guy here in town. Something about he bought a new car and took it to a shop to get professional system done, so he doesn't need old system anymore and is desperate for cash to pay for new system. He says both were brand new last year. (open mouth, insert grain of salt)
He is selling both amps to my friend for $300. (MRV-T407 and MRV-T707) My friend already has more power than he knows what to do with and is offering to resell me the 707 for $100. While I've never listened to either of them, he says they both pound with his pair of 10s.
Is this too much risk or should I take him up on the offer? Would I be better off to go with a new generic amp(for warranty)? My goal for my 'system' (I say that laughingly) is to be economical as possible. I don't want to go far from $100 and I'm just running 2 RF or Vega 10s. (either handles 75W RMS each sub) Oh, and I'm tapping my rear factory speakers for signal.

Ask him to let you wire the amp on your subs/speakers before you commit to buyiing. If it is in good shape and works, he should have no problem. I wouldn't be too concerned about a warranty anyways, most shops won't warranty products once you have installed them if you DIY anyways. Manufacturers carry warranties, but you have to pay shipping, processing, everything else and you are w/o equipment for 4-6 weeks. I'd listen to the amp on my setup then make a decision. If by "generic" you mean a low end, no name brand, don't do it. You will be throwing money away. Save up and get a good quality piece of equipment.
