My New '02 EX got broken into/Security system??

Some A-Holes broke into my new '02 Civic EX, and jacked my newly installed stereo. It just has the factory keyless entry (which, of course, doesnt do ****) What kind of security do you guys reccomend? I know nothing about security and all that, and was told all alarms do is make noise. But isnt that good to attract attention? HOw about that Alarm thatdoes random honks? Thanks

The new Viper 700 something. I work at Circuit City and one of the managers has it installed and my friend parked next to him and it went off. The remote keyring also has an LCD screen on it that shows you what made the alarm go off. Very Tite.

well when you're looking for an alarm, you want one that will disable your starter, have shock sensors, etc. Remember that if a thief REALLY wants something, he's gonna try his best to get around the alarm.
Viper/Clifford/et all ( they're are a part of Directed) make good alarms. Make sure you get an experienced professional to install it

Sorry about your car, there are some bad people out there. My old 87 Jetta got broken into about a year ago and I lost my system. It takes time, but you'll get over it. The worst is when you don't have insurance.

I learned from my mistakes and now have a $540 Viper alarm in the civic. It has backup battery, motion sensors, and more. I think alarms don't really do much except deter thieves, since if they wanted they could just break the window and cut the alarm wires. All it does is make noise, but it may make some amateur thieves think twice and go for the beater parked next to you with no alarm. As far as the car being stolen, the immobilizer is probably the best protection. For protecting a system, you can't do much.

THanks but im on a budget, i think one that attracts attention is fine huh? Oh and I heard that the 7th gens cant possibly be stolen cause of the chipped key that cuts out the fuel pump if the correct key isnt inserted. am i right that the civic cant be stolen or hotwired successfully?

Thanks Gearbox.. yeah its been 3 days, without a side window and im still very upset cause its a new car and all, i dont even have plates yet. Im thinking for the meantime to get some kind of Alarm/security sticker from viper or something and putting it on the window.. that will scare those illiterate morons away. An alarm with a glass breakage sensor and that honks shouldnt be too much right??? I heard one the other day that does random length honks to get peoples attention. Anyone know which alarm this is?

That is exactly what they do because i have a viper alarm and now the dam thing wont let me start the car cause my alarm is becoming sketchy, and wont activate my fuel pump. Im taking it back to the place who put it in to see what the deal is for sure, but otherwise i got an alarm for my own personal comfort of knowing it will help deter theives. I ended up getting one because my car was keyed, i know the alarm wont prevent that but it really just makes myself feel better. I also believe that the civics were the #5 ranked cars last year or something to be stolen. I think accords were number1.

Yeah, sorry to hear about that man.... My girlfriend used to drive a 95 Ford Contour, it was an ok car, got from point a to b just fine. But anways, for christmas she got an Aiwa CD player for her car, real basic, it really wasn't anything fancy, it was probably cheaper than your pioneer stereo. But in any case, somebody broke into it about a year and a half later, and the worse part was she was just about to trade it in for a new accord. So she had to buy a new stereo because otherwise she had a hole there and the dealer wouldn't give much on a trade without a radio or ****. People are sooo stupid..... but the point is, doesn't matter how cheap your radio may be, if its aftermarket they'll take it. I'm looking to get a good deal on an alarm too but I don't know what to get or where to get it installed, and I don't want to spend a whole lot on it..... but I would like one of those LCD pagers.... guess I'm kinda asking for a bit much huh? hehe.... anyways, sorry to hear about what happened.

Any good alarm is going to cost you money. So you can take your chances again with your new system or pay more for a better alarm. It's your choice.

Man, you really don't know too much about stereo thieves! First off, they survey your car to see what equipment you have. Next, they test your car to see if it's alarmed, if it is, they'll either leave it(if they're amateurs) or try to figure out which alarm you have(Car stereo stores typically install car alarms, how ironic, eh?). Afterwards, they'll monitor your car to see how long it's parked for. Then, they'll come back and steal it. My friends live in high theft areas and the thieves are ruthless! They'll steal the stereo equipment and once my friends get new stuff from their insurance money, it gets stolen right away again. It doesn't matter if you park in front of your house or on a lit street, alarm it, they still do it. One time, my friend's car was parked on his parents driveway and the thieves smashed the window, disabled his alarm, backed his car off the driveway, and preceded to strip the stereo bare! They stole power wires, his subs which were bolted to the frame, his amps which we installed under the seats(yes, they even unscrewed the seats!), and even his special high amp car battery. Another friend gets his truck broken into once a month, the thieves are afraid of his alarm but that doesn't stop them smashing his driver-side window($180 to replace every time). Another friend had his stuff stolen from his car that was locked and parked in a locked garage in the afternoon! And the list goes on! It's coming to a point that my friends aren't getting their stereos replaced at all, it's just not worth the headache anymore.

Why take the chance of having a stereo? I did once, I never blarred it and I never showed it off, I never got to enjoy it. It never got stolen but what is the fun having a stereo if you can't enjoy it?

There are a couple of things to stop the breaking of windows. I heard about this a while back, but have no idea where you can find it. It's a clear film that goes on your window. When they break the window, it simply sticks together in shattered pieces. Even when it's broken they can't get in. It sounds pretty expensive but it might work.

Keep in mind that you would still have to replace the window. Also if you ever got into an accident where you had to break the window, you would have a problem.

Actually thats not true... there is a new Viper 790, and Clifford Matrix RS3. Comes with the LCD remote and remote start and everything. They just haven't added it to the website yet, but some places are already starting to stock it. Gotta call around and find it, I was thinking about getting it, I found a place that has it $550 installed.

Snowman - that only works where the window has a solid frame around it. However, you still can remove the window or contort it enough to get the door unlocked. I remember seeing on the news awhile back about how fireman are now trained to remove those kinds of windows.

Okay, this thief just smashed your window to get into your car. Whats going to stop him from tearing apart your dash to get your radio out? Nothing at all. Oh, they will and they won't take the same care you do with your car.

Okay, now, how much does your insurance cover to theft? Find out that first before you start pissing off car thieves.

Here are some more alarm related tips. First of all, if you have a good alarm system, DO NOT put stickers on the car. This will give them info on which alarm you have. Also, a glass break sensor is expensive and a waste of money. If they break the window, the shock sensor will go off anyway. If they cut the window gently with a diamond cutter, then the motion sensor will go off when they hop in.

I have an $1800 sound system, nothing too elaborate. Just a small amp running two 10 subs, and a very expensive pioneer deck. Always take off the faceplate, and try to take it with you if you will be gone for a long time. I still have my new system because I also don't play it loud. It's bad for your ears and it will attract thieves. If you have to turn it up, then turn off the radio a mile before you park.

Good luck with your situation. I know its a pain to get that window fixed.

I just got the avital 3300 on two civics, mine and my cousins. my cousin's car was broken into twice. anything DEI for the most part is the exact same thing. Some of the circuitry is different. MY neighbor works for an alarm installer and did the work for me. glass breakage is a waste money. just get a motion sensor and a shock sensor, which any good alarm should have anyway. the new 7th gen has a chip in the key so if you get remote start you are gonna lose a key. make sure the installation is done right cause my friend had an alarm put into his bmw after it was broken into and had a remote start put it.. the person that installed his f**ked it up when they did the bypass cause even with his alarm blaring, the car would start right up..... mine doesn't do that and any alarm installed properly will prevent it from doing that. well sorry for your loss dude. just get something DEI and you will be fine. good luck.. oh yeah instead of the hood pin switch for a hood get a mercury tilt switch and it works pretty well.

Sorry to hear about your car.

Clifford makes really good alarms. Get the AvantGuard4. It has pretty much everything. Motion, tilt, shock, starter kill... It also has remote start, windows, sunroof, trunk, lights... I think the remote sunroof takes a little modifications I can't remember.

get a alarm with a paging unit- also a battery backup on the cpu brain, that way once the alarm is tripped, even if they cut the alrm or speaker, your paging unit will continue to go off- hop out of bed, get out there and kick some butt. You can even set it up with a switch so the alarm siren in the car doesnt even go off, the thief will never even knew he tripped an alarm and you are on your way with a ball bat
