how is the display? can the contrast be adjusted so it can be read at that tilted angle? i have sony deck right now and i have to turn the contrast all the way up before i see something. also how is it under sunlight? does it look cool as hell as stated by others?

i have the CDA-7894 (thats the one with the MP3 capability and the super 60Wx4 amp built in right?) in my 01 Ex Coupe, and if you want to be able to see the display during the day without using your hand to shade it from the light, this is not the HU to get. it is possible to see the display, but it is not just a matter of glancing at it while driving, it takes some effort if you know what i mean. however, in the night it looks very nice, and you can illuminate the buttons with an amber color instead of green so it blends with the dash lighting. also, it does not have adjustable contrast.
this HU is great otherwise, the built in amp is very good and the other features are excellent. the display is nice, it reads every form of mp3 track identification you would want (folder name, file name, track tag, as well as folder number and track number) and it sounds great. the 'time correction' supposedly is really nice but i've never taken the time to set it up. i have it hooked up to some Infinity Reference 652i 2-way 6.5's up front, and Infinity Reference 6953i 3-way 6x9's in the back and it sounds really nice even when cranked up really loud. i cant wait till i get some subs and amps. i am confident that this will be the one part of my current system that will be used even if i make serious upgrades on everything else, cause this thing is really a great HU, with many high end features.
it retails for $400, but i'd pay that price again for sure...i love this HU.

what?? no contrast adjustment? currently on my sony deck, if there wasn't any contrast adjustment, i wouldn't be able to see anything, even at night. can it be because its a dot matrix display instead and the alpine is a regular LCD? how does the titlting faceplate feature anyways?

I have the 7894 as well. I am very pleased with it but the display can barely be seen during the day. You can see it but like intruder said, you aren't going to be able to just glance at it.
Very clear and accurate sound reproduction though. If I was going to get another HU it would be the 7998.

btw, MBow, i am not Intruder heh, just cause he *stole* the cat icon doesnt mean we're the same person j/k
the tilting faceplate feature of the HU is completely useless if mounted in the stock location, because it only tilts upwards which points the display more towards the windshield, thus being useless. unless you mount it somewhere lower, like at the lighter socket area.

i know the stock stereo also has a segmented LCD display. i can still see the clock a little even in the daylight. would the display on the alpine also be similar or better or worse?
