under powering woofers...problem????

is there a problem with giving insufficient power to the woofers? i'm pushing 600 watts on the amp to a combined 800 watts woofers...this is all in RMS ratings. is it bad that the woofers are underpowered?

Yes it is the most common reason for a blown sub. If you try to push the amp to it's max at some point you'll experience clipping which is a nasty thing.

No No No.

Think about it ... that rating is a maxumim. Anything from 0 watts to the max is perfectly fine.

I have run a set of 12's off a 60x2 amp for about 5 years w/ no problems. Did they ever reach their full potential ... no. Did they play fine .... sure did. Hell I was hitting 130 db. All a more powerful amp would have done is make them sound cleaner and go louder.

Where you get into trouble is when you push the system beyond its limits. Pushing an amp too hard causes clipping, which in turn cooks subs. But any amp can clip no matter what the power rating.

Just use your head. When the distortion kicks in turn it down. Nothing bad will ever happen.
