Speaker Clearance .......... Arah !!!!!!
Hey Guys
I am having a bit of trouble here and need some help on this.
I went and tore the hell out of the back of the car last night in an attempt to put my new Kenwood eXcelon KFC-X698 6x9's and they will not clear the springs. ( Link to the Specs on Crutchfield ) . So in the end I put my Sony Xplod's back in and put it all together again.
I cant remember if anyone else had this problem or not, and what they did to fix it. I know I can put gas shocks in there but i am not sure I want to attempt that, I called Honda to see if I could upgrade to the Heavy Duty trunk springs cause I wasnt sure if I read they will give me the clearance or not, and they said it wouldnt.
I guess in the end I am wondering if I need some spacers or not and if so what size will I need for this?, cause I tried a few things last night and they didnt look like they would let me put the rear deck back in.
Please help me guys, I really want to get these in there cause they would finish off my Excelon system in the car.
Thanks in Advance.

I was looking at Crutchfield's chart in their catalog and found the Mounting Depth specs for you.
The car has 3 and 7/16" depth, and your Kenwoods have 3 and 5/16", so you have 2/16 or 1/8" clearance to work with. This ain't much, but it could work, theoretically. But you said it wouldn't clear the springs. So much for the 1/8" theory.
Here's the real kicker though. The top mounting height is 7/16" height for the car, and 15/16" for the speaker. Therefore, you have a speaker that is 8/16 or 1/2" too high for the rear deck. This would keep you from getting the rear deck back on, unless you wanted to cut it up.
You're trying to force a speaker that is both too deep and too high for the car. Unless you want to mod the car to MAKE it fit, I'd suggest another set of speakers that have smaller dimensions.
If you plug in our cars specs, Crutchfield will give you a list of what is an Easy-Fit. It shows the Bazooka M690, Infinity Kappa 692.5i, and the Kicker 02K69 in the 6x9 size. If you look in the 6x5" size, you have 10 choices. I put some 6.5"s in there just for rear fill, since they fit easily and I'm using a sub for bass. If you're planning on getting a sub, getting some 6.5s makes more sense, and it'll save you from pulling your hair out shoehorning those exclons in there.

Thanks man, I am going to do some playing around on the weekend and see what I can do th make this work, a buddy of mine is really good with this stuff so he might be able to figure something out. Right now I have a Kenwood Excelon MP3 deck, Excelon 5 1/4's with tweets, the 6x9's (damm), and Excelon Subs. So I should have a good system all around but I want to keep it all Kenwood Excelon, so I might have to change what I put in the rear without doing some spring reworking.
Thanks

Yeah, thats what I want to do with my 6.5"s in the rear. They're mounted in there pretty crappily now with a plastic adapter. I gotta remember to go by Lowe's tomorrow and find something to use as a plate like you're doing. Then it's just a matter of finding the time to take out the rear deck to put them in. I plan on sound-proofing it though, along with the rear quarter panel areas and possibly below the rear seat. Somebody online once told me about some cheap material that Lowe's and Home Depot sells that's very similar to Dynamat. It's called Peal and Seal, and it's used as roofing material insulation. It has a aluminum-looking silvery side and has a peel off sticky side with some asphalt type material sandwiched in between. It's cheap and works great. It comes in 25ft x 6" rolls for about $12 per roll. I've already used it behind my door panels. It's much cheaper than Dynamat and works the same or better.

Hey Thanks slick. I might have to look into doing that, if not I was talking to a friend who is real handy with cars and he said he would help me remove the trunk springs and put in a gas shock. But I might just look into a 6.5 setup as well.
Thanks guys

P.S. - That Peal and Seal is waterproof as well .........

Let me tell you I have always been a Crutchfield fan until recently. I oredered Kicker 6x9 which is one of 3 speakers that fit in the rear of a coupe. Wrong. Way to deep. They hit the truck torsion bars. So now I have Kicker 6-1/2 with an adapter.
I am not all happy with these speaker. They are rated to high for the stock system and do not sound good. I am looking into Alpines that are power matched to the Civic EX's stock wattage (30). Come in 6-1/2 and 6x9 but figure I'll have to do the 6-1/2s all the way around. I am looking for tight bass not ground pounding bass.
Are these good speakers? With a stock stereo? Any suggestions?
