how come my jl sub doesnt sound clean.

I have a 10w3 powered by an xtant 3001. I have taken back to tweeter 3 times now and all they say is that they need to adjust the crossover. The sub gets loud but is not clean. the bass is not smooth but instead it vibrates. i had a w0 before and it didnt sound like this. they refuse to think the sub is blown. no matter how i adgust the amp or the deck the sub sounds very distorted. please help.

maybe it is the ohm's not being low enough for the amp to push cleanly???

amplifier clipping? box too small? backwave of teh speaker interrferring with cone motion? crossover set too high? combination of any/all? check your amps to start.

my prediction is (this is based off the assumption that the same amp you have now powering the w3 was powering the w0) that you are grossly underpowering your woofer, turing it up to clipping before the sub reaches full xmax. ive got that problem now with my mids, need to buy another amplifier to give them more power.

remember, more headroom is always better!

I have a question related to this. I have a JL 8w3 in a ported box build according to WinISD. It's rated for 125 watts rms and i'm giving it about 150 watts rms. It seems like where there is a long bass note, it doesn't play it smoothly. I'm not sure if i'm describing it right. Is it just the music? Or, is it suppose to be like that? Thanks

listen to the song with headphones, that tell you if teh recording is supposed to be that way. as for slop, too much power isnt the problem, unless yrou stressing the woofer. as to winISD spec, if you were slighly off, would you say you made an error on the side of slightly more airspace than you needed? or did you make sure you were dead on? slightly less?

As WhiteRabbit pointed out, it is probably a gain issue with the combination of a crossover set up. How does it sound at low volumes? Moderate volumes? High volumes? It's probably listenable at low and moderate volumes, but at high volumes it sounds like the subs dead because of the clipped signal. With too high of a crossover point, you'll be likely to have cone breakup. That's clearly audible and will also make the sub perform poorly. Good luck!

i doubt that, because if im not mistaken(and im not to familiar with the xtant line), the 3001 is a 300 watt amp. the 10W3's are rated at 250 continuous, so hes not underpowering it at all. and personally i wouldnt add anymore power, seeing as how its pretty much a paper cone. i have a W3 too, and at higher volumes ive experienced what sounds like the cone deflecting. im using the 250/1 jl amp. im not sure whats happening, all i can say is, how are your gains set? im sure though that youre not underpowering them

in that case he was grossly overpowering his old w0 that was my concern, that he bought the amp to properly power a w0 in which case it would in fact be underpowering his w3. if, as you say, its pushing 300 true watts, then your absolutely right, its plenty of power for that woofer. if that IS the case, then it cant be an amplifier problem, as there would be no reason to turn it up to clipping. next bet is to check the headunit, to see if thats clipping, and also the crossover settings. crossover could be responsible for slop. and if you have all the bass boosts up on teh amp, on the deck, have LOUD on, etc, etc, etc, it would be easy to clip an amplifier at even low gain settings. try setting your radio's settings all to flat, and try resetting the gains. that would be my first move.....

I have 2 12wo's bandpass enclosure and had the same problem. my bass was loud but not clean. so i did a few things that kinda works and fixed 85% of the problem.
1. dynamat your trunk lid and side trunk panels
2. dynamat under the rear deck.
3.remove the plastic rear deck from the inside and dynamat that too.

that should stop most of the rattling and bad bass volumes.
