Unless your running a 1000Watt + High Current amp..and like cranking your music to the max 24/7..

If you keep your listening level within reason you'll nnever have to worry about it....My system with my 1300Wrms of class a/b Power drawas 32amps at a nice loud and clean listening level..which is more than most can take because I'm 40% deaf to begin with. ... At full power..my amps draw 84 amps playing a 50hz and 1khz sine wave ... with Music the biggest amperage draw I've had was a 52 amp average playing 976-BASS (on a calibrated termpro mic hitting 147db's)...peaked a little over 90amps though.

So to answer your questions. If you want to run a big system..ps/2 Neons.. yes an alternator upgrade is highly reccomended. If your running a pretty big system with a class D amp for your subs..you may elect to get a capcitor if you have dimming but a new alternator would not be necessary.

I went the overkill route...but then again on occasion I hook up my 600 watt power converter and and host tailgate parties out of my car..with music..a few portable floodlights and a electric cooler ..

Yo....

I would love to hear what alternator was installed??? I 'm close since my system draws the alternator right down at IDLE so I think I should do sumptin about it. The systems uses about 25 to 30 amps in peaks. Our factory alternator is only 70 amps at 30 volts to begin with and with my system and AC running it is around 12volts at idle from the alternator. Its close but I'm sure I should get sumptin since my system is only going to get better and need more power!!!

My old alternator put out 14.1 volts at idle..but voltage dropped a fair bit with all accessories on.. at idle..the alternator generally won't charge...there's not much that can be done about this. If the dimming bothers you..get a capacitor...otherwise..it;s nothing to worry about. If your driving at highway speeds and your lights dim and your car slows down 2-3MPH..then your drawing far too much current lol.. And yes..you can use your alternator as an engine brake

As for my alternator..it's an Ohio Generator 160amp hot rated alternator with external regular bought from ampmanaudio.com cost was $670US+shipping. 1 year warranty. Comes with all parts needed took me 3 hours to install...(I'm a certified mechanic) never worked as one though. If I had a lift it would have took an hour and a half.

Cheers
