air space for DIY
Anyone know how much air space i would be dealing with per speaker? Also, do you really need to put the cotton inside the box? I thought you would get more echo from an empty box.

depends on your box. you can build it as large or as small as you want. right now i am working on a design to fit a VERY LARGE box in our civics. but for something like teh spare tire well, you can just measure your box, or calculate the air you need, tehn build the box accordingly.
grey or allman would be a much better source to ask for how to fit a small box in your trunk. i specialize mainly is sucking every drop of air possible from a certain location
ultimate test: get over 2 cubes internal for a single shiva for a regular cab S-10

im building a wedged box right now for my 2 12" alumapro elchemy mx's. i need .9 cubic feet of air space per sub. so i take my dimensions (lenth x width x depth). when theyre multiplied, i divide by 1728. that gives the airspace inside the box and thats whats gonna give you your tight sound on your subs. if u need more explaining let me know, but sceientifically thats how it should be done.

in taking calculations, do i reduce the length by the size of the board, for example, if the board is 3/4, and the measurement is 32 inches, its really 31 1/4, and do the measurements that the speaker require include the fact that the speaking takes up space as well?
airspace for the woofer is INTERNAL.
net volume taken up by the box is EXTERNAL.
for example, my 4.5 cubic foot ported box took up about 6 cubic feet, net

stuffing teh box will never hurt in a sealed box.
might not help, but wont hurt.
edit: what stuffing does, is to slow down teh backwave of teh speaker so it doesnt just resonate agasint the back wall and interfere with cone motion (distortion) if your rear wave doesnt interact with teh cone, stuffing wont help.
but if there IS interaction, then its possible that it will help.

Well back when i made the DIY ages ago....
I used 1.2cu ft. per sub. This is what i recommend.....
Go to Crutchfield and find your sub.
Then see what airspace it reccommends for your sub.
I know the DIY i made is sort of confusing, any other questions let me know.

well, from the measurements i took, it looks like .72 because i took 13x32x6 and divided by the number provided above which is 1728, came out with 1.44444 which i divided by two because of the both compartments. i hope its more closer to this because the sub i am purchasing needs air space of .6 and i figured those were the outside measurements which lowers the inner to about .58, but what i was curious was that if when you put the sub in the box, does it take from that number.

you did the DIY? i was wondering if when the box sits in the trunk, does it sit higher than the original floor or flush? im curious on if i can imbed an amp rack or if i can even run the wires under the board, btw, im using plexi for the top and cutting designs in the carpet so i can run neon under.
what subs, MV? youd be surprised how often factory reccommended box specs are way off...... *cough* JL *cough* *cough*
mo or myself can model up the most ideal box if youd like, just need to know what woofer..
or you can model it up yourself, winISD from www.linearteam.org

I'm terrible at this Winisd stuff, but i tried inputting the info in, but i'm getting 1.4 ft^3. I'm getting the info from here: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/Pi...1030534730.pdf
it's odd, there it asks fo .8 ft^3, while crutchfield says that it wants about .6 ft^3

it just proves that manufacturer specs are BS.
but i will be honest with you. with pioner woofers, kenwood woofers, usuing manufacture spec to me sounds boomy and peaky, trying winISD box, it sounded sloppy and had no upper bass controll at all.
so i dunno, might be screwed either way......
