relocation of head unit to center console cubby???
I remember back in the day somebody relocated the head unit to the little cubby in the center console. I searched, but could not find it. Does anybody know where it is?
Thanks.
Thanks.
that was me:

its really simple:
1 - get 1/4 inch plywood, you can get it even at some craft stores. you want something REALLY nice! you will be sanding this thing down, so you dont want it to get all raggedy on teh edges where you are sanding it.
2 - cut out in teh shape of the panel. the easiest way to do this is to cut out cardboard in the shape, cause thats easy to test fit, then use that as the model for the wood.
3 - cut out your two holes, one for the deck, the other for the E-brake. My deck came with a plastic frame to put on after installing the deck. It is tapered, so its thick at the bottom, but a point at the top. i wish i had a picture of this (it is the one that came with the deck, not the install kit) I cut the hole for my deck sized such that it was as big as the HALFWAY point of this piece. that way, when i fit that piece on, the top sat flush with the wood.
4 - sand down teh edges so that it form fits to your console. this takes so much time! a power sander helps. dont forget to sand down teh front to match up to the shifter!
5 - deck hole: this leaves a big ugly gap between that plastic piece and the wood. I used wood filler to smooth it out. this is how I got my deck to fit so perfectly in that panel. If you want to add coin holders at this time, feel free, alls you gotta do is cut a hole and make a wood box. easy.
6 - once it was all ready, I painted it satin black. It looked nice, but the paint soon would crack sitting in the sun, especially around the wood filler. ugly. So i cut out some of the fibercabon i had laying around, and glassed over it. came out perfect, i really liked the texture it left, so i didnt bother to fill the weave, i just wet the fibers.
I got bored of that tho, and now I have filled in the weave, i just have no pics of that yet =/
one thing to be concerned about, is that yoru deck may not be able to handle playing sideways. my deck is a 4 year old pioneer, and pioneer is famous for never skipping, ive never had a problem. But hey, if you build it, and your deck skips in that position, you can always sell your panel to a forum member here

not worth making nice fiberglass kicks for s h i t t y speakers. theyve been blown for years.
ive got a set of DD mids coming in the mail, i THINK they can fit in the standard kickpanel site with NO problems with the clutch! but why bother with that, i realized a better solution.
Im going to try putting them in door pod kicks. If the proximity to listening level is not too close, then it should be absolutely perfect. will even give me back my dead pedal while allowing for perfect imaging. Ive been talking to a buddy of mine who has been experimenting with line sources (like the big home theater towers) I'm going to try to implement some of his theory and experimentation in my car. should be an interesting project!
you say your digging my kicks still.. ....how about my trunk? id be curious to know what you think about that. first thing i was told was that it looked like a "bloody mess" lol.......

Door pods mean hacing up the door panels and reinforcing some metal... hmm some fiberglass should work. Your trunk looks pretty bad too..but it's a work in progress. Under my trunk floor it's a bit more nasty than your because I ripped the fiberglass our and never fully cleaned it. Like I said though..it's all a work in progress....
