Building Box for an Eclipse
Will so I just bought my friends Eclipse and JBL amp off of him, minus a box, and was going to build my own. I have the knowledge of how to build one but was wondering what you guys, Mowhak or WhiteRabbit, think to what size and dimension I should build the box. The sub is an 10 inch Eclipse 88100DVC and the amp is a JBL BP600.1. I grabbed it from him for $250, for both, so I thought I got off good. Anyway, I am like an 80% SQ and 20% SPL man. I am not going to be doing no competitions so I dont need the major SPL. I mostly just like to have good clean, quality sounding music. Anywho, space is important in my trunk but not all important.
Thanks guys,
Matt
P.S. My friend had it in a sealed box @ about .75 ft^3.

when i model that sub up, a QTC of .71 occurs at 1.6-1.7 cubes, the f3 is about 39 Hz. in a .75 cube box, f3 is the same, but there is a small peak around 80 Hz. if you liked how it sounded at .75 cubes, there is no real advantage at 1.6 cubes (bass will be a bit tighter and a little more accurate, but you lose that extra dB around 80 Hz.)
If you want to experiment with a ported box, 3.5 cubes tuned to 22-23 hz will give you a FLAT response down to 30 Hz, and the f3 will be approaching 20 Hz. definitely a good design if you like low warm bass!
here is what I would do if I were you. I would build a .75 cube box AND a 3.5 cubic foot (this is 3.5 BEFORE sub and port displacement!) and listen to both. the ported box will be a couplea dB louder, and should be tighter too (in theory) but will take less power.
the differences you *should* notice will be that the ported box is louder, will go lower, should sound cleaner (the gain will be lower) "sound" louder, and also sound "warmer". the sealed box should "feel" louder, sound quieter, punch harder (i fear after the punch it will be sloppy tho....)
then go with what you think sounds better. I like low warm bass, so im a die hard ported fan. i built a ported box for my friend's volvo (4 kenwood 12's) and he didnt like it at all. we are going to seal up the port after the competition on june 30, i think he will be much happier after that.
what kind of music do you liten to? he listens to rock and classical. if you dont like low bass music, sealed might be better for you...... but nothing can beat actual in car testing.......

Do Not port that sub.. the suspensions are too loose, way too loose to handle a large ported enclosure. much less a small one. The old DVC 6ohm one's could be used ported but the new DVC 4ohm versions cannot. They'll rip apart. But..they work very will in .75cubes and 1.5 cubes even. It's an awesome sub. In 1.5 cubes or larger, pwoer handling goes down a fair bit. In .75-1cu.ft it can take a solid 850Wrms all day with music. At 1.5 it bottomed out alot with that power...I had 2 of these puppies for awhile before. Very awesome..

Thanx for the info you guys. I think I will go ahead and try building a .75 ft^3 and see how it sounds. I mainly listen to stuff like Incubus, CHili Peppers and others forms of rock. Although I gotta bump the R&B for the girl sometimes. Ill let you guys know how it sounds.
Thanx,
Matt
