Just bought a used 2002 civic and am finding a few issues the previous owner never mentioned. Biggest problem is about a week after I bought it I went to start it one day and when I turned the key nothing happened. This happened a few times before I noticed a green "key" idiot light flashing on dash. I dug out the manual and it says there is some kind of immobilizer. One thing it mentioned was to not have any other fobs on the keychain, which I didnt. I even took every other key off the ring. I have had the car a few weeks now and the problem is on going, happens every 4th or 5th time I try to start it. Usually I take the key out , wait till the light stops flashing then try again and it starts. But a few times it has taken several attempts. A couple times it turned over for about a half second before it shuts down.
So can I fix this, or is there a way to disable the immobilizer?

could also be the ECU or the key itself does this happen with your spare key also ???. side note there is a brake pedal code you can enter if you ever get stranded because of the Immobiliser you can get the code from a honda dealer.

Read the manual about what you should and should not see that green light do, when it should and should not flash.

The immobi system does not have "starter cut" on that car. If should crank no matter if the immobi system sees the correct key or not.



Does it have remote start? Odd antenna on the inside of the windshield?

Weak battery or low battery voltage can cause the immobilizer to not work right too.

I changed my daughter's battery and the lingering flashing green key problem went away.

Ezone- You are correct, Dealer told me it would still turn over so I am guessing the problem is not the immobilizer. It has a newer battery and it tests good. I am now thinking there may be a loose connection somewhere as the problem didnt start till at least a week after I bought the car, and is getting progressively worse. If I get a chance this week I am going to make sure battery connections are tight and perhaps the starter as well, if I can find it. Otherwise its going to the dealer Friday. I can 't afford to get stranded.

Thanks guys. A couple days before it was booked into the dealer the problem mysteriously disappeared. I showed up for my appointment but the advisor agreed I should just leave it for now. Been a week with no problems. I'm guessing there is a wiring issue somewhere, will hope for the best.
