Space behind double DIN receiver to install a compact amp (like Alpine 445u)?

SSIA...

I want to install an amp in my 2002 EX coupe which is stock except for a double-DIN sized JVC receiver I just put in last week. I want to put in all new speakers as well as a compact amp, like the Alpine KTP-445U or the Clarion XC-1410, with the goal of ideally fitting it behind the dash.

If I can't fit it behind the dash, I will probably go without an amp, although maybe that's not even worth upgrading speakers then? The JVC unit I have puts out 20W RMS. And if I did go without an amp, should I use low RMS rated speakers?

Also, I soldered the harness adapter to the JVC's wires -- I guess those all need to be cut out and resoldered to the amp (sigh)?

Thanks in advance!

I don't think you will be able to fit an amp behind there. Another option is to mount it under the rear parcel shelf, under the seat, or in the glove box. Since it is a small amp there really shouldn't be to much heat generated but generally you want to keep them somewhere there is air flow (not a glove box).

Yes you will need to undo the wires that you have done to solder them to the amp.

It would still be beneficial to get new speakers even without an amp. If you decide no amp then it would be best to match the RMS rating of the speakers to the JVC unit. You can under-drive the speakers, which is just as bad as over-driving them. You want a speaker that can handle the output of the hu. Also match the impedance of the JVC outputs.

Thanks for your input!

I ended up buying some Rockford Fosgate Prime R165-S (I think) component speakers with a 6.5" woofer connected to a 1/2" or 1" tweeter using a passive/in-line crossover (no external box) which I'll install later this week when they arrive. They're rated at a pretty low 5-40W RMS so hopefully it'll go okay with the JVC's 20W RMS output.

I'm going to see how that goes, but if it sounds decent I'll go ahead and get some 6x9 Rockford Fosgate coaxials (rated at 5-65W RMS so not as ideal I guess) to put in the rear deck (pro install since it sounds like a PITA).

Both speakers are 4 ohm so hopefully should go okay with the JVC receiver which is supposedly (per spec sheet) to be used with 4 ohm speakers (not sure if the stock speakers are 2 or 4 ohm but they sound fine with them).

I just hope the tweeters will fit in the stock tweeter mounting holes, they look like they might.
