ECU Swap. Resetting needed??

2002 Honda Civic LX
Mechanic advised i need a new ecu due to CEL that keeps turning on after the issue has been corrected. He ran some testing and turns out that the ECU needs replacing. My key is chipped/has immobilizer and I wanted to know if the new ecu that i have ordered will need to be programmed to be compatible with my current key and car or if it will need to be reprogrammed. If so, is the dealership the only place this can be done? And how much would this cost
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you
-Rene

Yes and yes. Dealer is the only place, since it's security system.

I wonder what exactly is wrong, and if this is the correct repair.

after the issue has been corrected
Wait: If the issue was truly corrected, the CEL would not be an issue.

Amirite?

You have to tow it to the dealer with the new ECU in the car. It's about 50 bucks for a reflash. Are you running an aftermarket header by chance?

Alternate plan: OP could drive it to the dealer on the original PCM,
swap the new unit in while sitting in the parking lot
then have them program it.

Price varies widely.
50 wouldn't get your car in the door at our shop, and we are cheaper than the surrounding area dealers.

Yeah price definitely depends. I got quoted an hour of shop labor ($86) when I had my immobilizer reset for my k swap. I lucked out and the service guys ended up not charging me. They were pretty excited to have a swapped car in the shop I think.

I've heard some dealerships quoting in upwards of $200 to do it though.

Those are some rough quotes, most dealers in my area will do it for 50-100.
