Alternator and Battery problem

I own a 05 Civic and replaced the battery after my car wouldn't start and found out the battery was dry. With a brand new charged battery I am reading 16.5 volts across the battery terminals with the car running. My friend says that my alternator is putting out too much voltage and this is what cooked my battery. Should my alternator be replaced?

Re: Alternator and Battery problem

he is right, faulty alternator killed the first battery and will kill the new one, along with your car's electrical parts if you wait too long.

Re: Alternator and Battery problem

OP, did you change the battery cables with new ones. When i was cranking up the battery, it wouldnt start, i took it to Autozone and put it to test & they told me something was eating up the battery!!!.. Battery was losing power & had only 29% charge left. Autozone swapped my battery and have new one.
Gonna put new battery cables & also check on alternator.

Re: Alternator and Battery problem

Would replacing the voltage regulator in the alternator probably solve this problem?

Re: Alternator and Battery problem

its usually cheaper to buy a new alt than to fix the old one, but yes more than likely the regulator went bad.
