technical requirements for rear speakers?

The original rear speakers in my '02 coupe have been blown for a few years. I'm replacing them.

Is there anything special I should watch for when buying replacement speakers? Is there a special wattage or voltage or anything that I must be aware of?

I don't want super-powerful speakers ... the originals had plenty of power before they died. But I do want to not stress out the wiring and/or factory stereo amplifier by using the wrong equipment.

any advice welcome, TIA!

if your using the stock head unit which i believe is like 15 or 25 watts very low then you should have no problems with basically any after market speakers. the only thing to worry about is the depth of the magnet which if to big can make contact with the bars that help open and close the trunk. if you look in the trunk you will see what im talking about.

Re: technical requirements for rear speakers?

Basically the main problem is just mounting depth as mentioned above

You can purchase just about any after market 6x9 with good reviews.

A Honda speaker adapter would be a good suggestion as well

Re: technical requirements for rear speakers?

stick with basic pioneers like walmart carries. they are lower power handling like 30w rms so they will sound good as stock replacements. make sure you check the specs on the box. as you go to better speakers with higher power handling (60w rms), they will sound worse because the factory stereo is very low power. for comparison, a typical aftermarket stereo is 20w rms per channel, stock deck is around 10w rms. stock speakers are usually around 20w rms power handling.

Re: technical requirements for rear speakers?

The local Wally World has some Sony XS-R6944 6x9 speakers with a rated power out put (aka nominal or RMS, I presume) of 50W and a peak of 300W.

(pdf http://www.docs.sony.com/release/XSR6944_EN_FR_ES.pdf )

They also have Pioneer TS-G974M 6x9 speakers with 40W nominal and 400 peak.

It seems these speakers would be usable, but if my head unit has only 15-20W output, and the HU power should be 75-90% as powerful as the speaker RMS, aren't both the Sony and Pioneer speakers referred to above too powerful for my HU?

For example, the Pioneer with a 40W "nominal" (nominal = rms?) output: 0.75 * 40W = 30W, but my HU is only 25W (apparently).

For the Sony: 0.75 * 50W "rated" (RMS?) = 37W, but my HU is only 25W apparently.

So it seems the Pioneers are slightly more closely matched to my head unit.

It looks like these guys

Sell the factory speakers ... that would be OK. Cheap, too.

Re: technical requirements for rear speakers?

well when you factor in shipping there going to be just as expansive as the cheapest sony or pioneer walmart speakers and your left with sub par sound quality evan for walmart speakers . your thinking to much about this just pick up some walmart 6×9s and be done with it lol.

Yeah I know I know ... I like to be careful.

One of the things I've learned about this experience is this:

Buy your replacement speakers --before-- you take the car apart.

I've been driving around with the rear seats, c-pillar panels, plastic passenger-side panels, rear deck panel and the front passenger side seatbelt removed for the past couple of days.

Lulz.

Re: technical requirements for rear speakers?

the pioneers will be the best bet. they should still sound decent with the factory deck. i got a set of 6.5 inch pioneers for our 92 accord with stock tape deck (and aftermarket cd changer) and they sound great with crisp highs and plenty of bass.
