Rear USB in 03 civic?
Rear USB in 03 civic?
So,
I am planning on surprising my SO by replacing his radio in his 03 Civic for his birthday (I just got a new car loaded with tech crap, and he is jealous... so a cool headunit replacement is in the cards
)
I have been doing a bunch of research on it, but have run into a few questions:
1. I can install a double-din unit if I want using http://www.amazon.com/Metra-95-7899-.../dp/B001JT12OO correct? Are there any that work better (such as this http://www.amazon.com/Scosche-HA1710.../dp/B003ULP5FG )? The first one seems to have trouble with JVC double-din units
2. How do rear-usb units work? I understand the USB is in the back, but how do I get to it? I am assuming I run a cable, but where does the cable come out? In the middle console? In the glove compartment? Do I need to cut a hole?
3. Are there any brands that seem to work better in Civics then others? I can't think of a reason this would be the case, but figure its a good question to ask! (If I do single-din I am looking at the clarion vz401 [just hoping that popout mechanism actually works], and if I do double din, I think a JVC... I wish I could find examples of their interfaces and nav systems though)

Re: Rear USB in 03 civic?
Get the second one that is the one for double din. The usb I ran it to the glove box since theres a hole the and easier to install. Jvc mmmm I would get something different. Also get a wire harness that way you don't have to hack up your cars wires.

Re: Rear USB in 03 civic?
1. Second one should work
2. Rear usb is exactly what it is, a USB port in the back of the unit.
You plug in a USB cable, and route it wherever you like. Glove box, etc.
If you were creative, this is what I'd do,
Grab a 4~6ft male-female USB cable, plug the male end into the rear of the unit, route the cable down to the extra slots above the cup holders, where the fog light switch should be, cut the cover to fit the female USB and glue it in place, then just put the cover back in.
That way, you have a flush little usb slot in the front where you can put anything (usb, flash drive, ipod cable, etc)
3. JVC, Clarion, and Dual are pretty much bottom of the barrel brands.
But some people seem to like them.
Their menu navigations are garbage as well.
A nice alpine/pioneer/kenwood would be nice, but really expensive. and since this is a gift, I doubt youd want to spend too much

Also, I really like your idea for the usb adapter, that seems like it would work perfect!

I ran the USB down the console to the storage compartment near the arm rest. The storage compartment is easier to reach than the glove compartment from the drivers seat and with the sliding top you can leave an iPod attached and have it out of sight.
Re: Rear USB in 03 civic?
I'm gonna have to agree that Clarion is pretty good. I just got the cz-500 last fall after my pioneer deck got stolen and it has been awesome.
Anyway. just my 2 cents about the whole process. You might want to check out local stereo shops and see if they have price match policies. Since Crutchfield is an authorized dealer for a lot of stuff I took their price sheet down to my local stereo shop and they price matched it on the spot. I think I ended up getting something like $100 off their list price.
If you do that you don't have to wait for shipping and you have a physical store you can go to if something goes wrong
Just a thought.
Good luck though!

Re: Rear USB in 03 civic?
Well, I ended up going with a Pioneer X930BT with XM attachment. I also opted for the second faceplate, since the first one had people complaining about it.The place I'm having install it is going to come to me, and is about $100 for install
Re: Rear USB in 03 civic?
One more quick question:
As I said, I ended up going with http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ULP5FG for the double-din. However, do I also need something like this? http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...ents/ADT-VA133

LMFAO Clarion Is one of the more top brands! your walmart argument is invalid. if ANYTHING, pioneer is in the trash category, kenwood clarion and alpine have been around for a long while, Jvc Is more MID grade and so is pioneer seconding JVC, Dual is complete garbage. so is jensen and supersonic, farenheit and boss.
trust me, I've researched on so much car audio just to find the perfect system combination. I have yet to get results though....
