tachometer and stereo installation
tachometer and stereo installation
i just got a 2001 honda civic and i need some information on installing a tach and a stereo first off i have a suntune tach it has red black green and blue wires i read to use the blue wire behind the passanger headlight but i tried it and it doesnt seem to be working is there possibly another place to hook up the rpm wire? and also i have a pioneer avh-p3200dvd deck (double din) that i need to put in and i was wondering if anyone knew where i could get the plastic thing to make it fit

Re: tachometer and stereo installation
if you look at the two harnesses that connect into your cluster one of them has a blue wire with silver markings, you can tap into that for your tach. i dont have my civic right now so i cant tell you which harness and which wire. as for the green, i just tapped it into the illumination wire going to my stereo, i did the one that just turns on and not the one that dims.
as for your stereo, i would go with ebay...something like this:

Re: tachometer and stereo installation
hmm, thats weird. whch year civic do you have? i have an 04 VP and thats how i got it for my tach.
its in the blue connector right next to the tab you push to get the harness out of the cluster. here is a pic stolen from the user "Taffy"
edit: dont mind the arrows

Re: tachometer and stereo installation
that picture is from an 01-03 civic, because they were doing the swap to the new gauge clusters. maybe you overlooked it? or its tiime for another member to chime in lol.
Re: tachometer and stereo installation
argh, im not sure where else you would be able to get a signal. best bet is to follow that wire back from the engine bay and check to make sure its not broken...just use a multimeter
Re: tachometer and stereo installation
wow this is really becoming annoying

it is stupid they didnt even bother to put one in these cars with a standard trans. how would i use a multimeter to check the wire? i have a digital fluke one but what am i going to connect the leads to and what am i looking for?

Re: tachometer and stereo installation
i still dont have my civic back yet so i cant tell you where that wire goes. but im basically saying that you follow it back to where it goes (possibly the ecu, but idk) and check the resistance from that point to the end of the wire and that should be zero. if the resistance is not zero then it is likely that there is a break in he wire and you should just tap closer to where the wire is coming from. also, if you want to check if the tach is just not reading the signal, you can touch the black to any ground and touch the red to the blue wire that is behind the headlight. you should get a voltage around 6V and it will fluctuate when the engine i revved. i hope that is fairly clear (although i doubt it). if you have any more questions dont hesitate to ask
Re: tachometer and stereo installation
let me ask you a question...just to cover basis, because human beings overlook things.
when you tested your tachometer, did you hook up the positive and negative wires along with the signal wire?? if you didnt then that is why its not working. if youre in the engine bay just have someone hold the positive and negative to the battery while the car is on (potentially bad idea, but it shouldnt make a difference if its for a few seconds) and hook up the tach signal wire. if it doesnt work then your tach is probably dried (check the fuse if it has one).

Re: tachometer and stereo installation
i did hook it up to the battery the light in the tach turns on just no rpm reading on it
black -
red +
blue (light) +
green signal wire
i also checked the other blue wires in that bundle just in case but nothing on those (i didnt think that was it but i thought i should check anyway just in case)
