Re: crutch field offer amps with two free subs

what is the best gauge wire for subwoofer some stereo store only carried 12. i found another one that carried 8 for 75c a foot.

I talked to someone on crutchfield and they told me 16 would be enough... that doesnt sound right does it?

also i have 17 feet of positive wire (8guage) from the positive wiring from the amp kit. could i use some of that would i have enough left over? im installing in the trunk.

Re: crutch field offer amps with two free subs

Power wire is not the same as speaker wire

Subwoofer, I'd typically go with 8~12 gauge

16 is small, I would only use 16~18 for speakers

Re: crutch field offer amps with two free subs

Battery to amp, get 4ga power cable. Amp to sub, Get 12ga speaker wire.

Re: crutch field offer amps with two free subs

im not saying ur wrong but why would you say power wire is different from speaker wire? I keep reading its the same, im now thinking i should go buy 4gauge wire and use the 8 gauge from the kit for the sub wiring.

Re: crutch field offer amps with two free subs

Well, if you want to get technical, yes, they are copper wires surrounded by plastic, technically the same

But, most power wires are not insulated/shielded the same way as speaker wire, At least the good brands of speaker wires anyways, and susceptible to noise and interference.

the thing is, youd have to run both pos and neg wires, not just one power line, which makes it messy

Speaker wires are usually bonded together making it clean and easy to route it.

Just honestly, I would do it properly one time, and never have to deal with it again.

Re: crutch field offer amps with two free subs

Easy answer, power cable is a single conductor, speaker wire is a dual conductor.

Re: crutch field offer amps with two free subs

the box that i got came with a cable terminal of 16 guage wire. so it would be easy to just connect the sub to the box and then to connect the amp to the box using the spring loaded terminal. kinda like this

and if im going to get something like 8 guage to actualy wire my sub in parallel. then end up using the terminal hence, using the 16 gauge wire wouldnt that just defeat the purpose of getting 8 gauge wire???? AHHH

anyways, what should i do. cut off the 16 gauge wire and re solder on 8 gauge wire to the terminal

or should i just get 16 gauge wire for wiring my sub...

personally, i'd buy a roll of 12ga or 14ga speaker wire, get rid of the wires that came with the sub enclosure, make new pigtails for inside the box with the 12 or 14ga, and use the remaining to wire the box to the amp. get some good wire like this
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_211UCT1...e.html?tp=2917

and if you got the Kicker 1000.1 amp, i'd get a 4ga power kit, not an 8ga. get something like this.

^ Yep

And that's why I didn't suggest buying from best buy.

Re: crutch field offer amps with two free subs

i decided on getting the 500.1 since i only needed to power that one subwoofer. For a car as small as ours I thought two 12" speakers would be over kill. =P
(I wanted enough "boom" to feel it, not to kill my ears =P)

i dont have a soldering kit, i would need to buy it, so is 16 gauge sufficient for my sub to amp?

Pretty much any soldering iron will work...
Walmart, radio shack, anything, I'd get one more than 35W though
