Can you install a sub on the stock head unit?
Do our stock HUs have any preouts? If so you can or there is another way but not highly recommended you can run the remote to the radio fuse and get one of those line converters maybe this is a crazy thought possibly better just to get a new HU.

you can, but it won't sound like anything, the oe headunit won't be able to power it correctly, it'll sound like a regular speaker, if any sound does come out. you definitly need an amp

I am doing an install currently in a 98 mustang. He would like to keep his current (stock) deck, which is just fine. my buddies' 4runner has a full soundstage in it now as well, he wanted to keep his stock deck.
its really quite simple. alls you gotta do is tap into the ACC pin on the deck, wire a switch in series, and use that as your remote for the amp. Guarantees that your amp will not draw idle current when the car is off, and that you have teh option of turning your sub on and off when the car is on. unfortunately you can leave the sub on while the radio is off, but that is only with teh car on, no biggie.
as far as inputs go, the amps I use in such a system all have line level inputs. I dont have to bother wiring a LOC (line out converter) to change the speaker level outs to RCA's for the amp. its just easier in my opinion, and its just one less thing in-line with yoru signal. they are pretty cheap tho, and if your stuck with an amp with no line level inputs, well, you gotta invest the $20 for one ;p
<< if you have an amp that accepts speaker inputs you can.
my eclipse amp does. but it will sound sound pretty bad i would suggest getting an new hu >>
it may sound prety bad, yeah. but then again, my buddy's 4runner sounds bad-@$$ with his new stage. 150x2 RMS to each side of a Fanatic P comp set. changed my whole view about RF (tho later i leared the company is making upgrades to their sets.)
there is no reason you need a new deck. if teh one you got works now, then why bother upgrading? my old car had only an AM/FM radio, and my 2k1 only had the cassette player. definitely needed a change but you got teh factory cd-player? a little experimantation with the amp gains, the bass controls, the fader, and youll find that the deck power is more than clean enough.

yes I have subs on both of my Civics with stock radios...and it dosnt sound like ****...youll def need an amp tho and this thing at radio shack (dont know what it is my friend did everything for me)
I had my polk 12 hooked up to my stock radio... It sounded alright, but nothing great. They hook the sub into the rear speaker line.... I recently installed my kenwood head unit because I wanted better sound, and it does indeed sound 10x better..
you can alsolutely retain your stock radio. you pull signal from the rear speakers, and use a line out converter to get a signal from that. that will give you sinal for yrou amplifier, power is likje any other amplifier install.
it works, and works well. if you dont feel confident in doing it, any shop can hook you right up real quick

well, its not industry standard practice to disconnnect teh rears, but i dont happen to agree with that practice.
you can grab some t-taps, nd jsut tap the wires going into the 6x9's. those wires you connect right to the LOC, which will have female rca plugs, you use those to get the signal to teh amplifier.
for remote, your cig lighter ive found is the easiest to grab, youll need a length of wire to go from teh cig lighter to teh rear of the car, any wire will do, tho it would be kind of pointless to run like 12 guage wire, something that large is useless. this will be yoru remote wire.
ground you get form the frame of the car, and inconspicuous point. make sure to grnd the paint off.
power comes directly from teh battery, just like any other amplifier install.
thats basically it!

Notice on this Alpine amp that it has speaker level input. You'd connect this to your rear speakers. You don't have to unplug them from the 6x9s, just tap into the signal. If you don't use an amp with this built-in, you'll need a line level convertor, such as the second pic. It shouldn't be more than $15 or so. It works the same way, tapping into the rears, but gives you rca jacks for the amp.
Run a signal wire like WhiteRabbit said, and you're done. Hook up the power and ground to the amp like you normally would. This really isn't complicated guys.

i have an 03 with stock head unit and 2 big *** subs.... it sounds awesome, all i did was buy a rc converter and ran my subs through my rear speakers (that way i can just fade foward and kill the subs). cost about $30... wat less than new HU
