Re: LED Blue map lights, help
most of those pnp leds are garbage. the only ones even worth getting are the luxer1 white led bulbs. the rest are made in china using junk leds that will just fail in a few months.

Re: LED Blue map lights, help
are you set on blue? they do make quality blue leds and i would recommend lumileds superflux if you want it to last forever. pretty expensive tho and you need to know how to wire em properly and fit in that small space. map lights dont have a large area to work with.
actually i did have good luck with this one other pnp bulb. its a cheaper chinese one but its brighter than most at 0.25w and looks pretty good. its just plug and play, and if you dont use the map light much, it should last for a while. they have all the colors.
http://www.ledlight.com/t10-wedge-1-...led-light.aspx
i have the ambers in my map lights and its about 1/4th the brightness of my 1w led dome light (35 lumens). looks good too like a regular bulb. its bright enough when you want some light to see with but not overpowering. i think you will like it.

Re: LED Blue map lights, help
i kinda am set on the blue ones because the lights on my stereo deck are blue and i kind of want to stick with that theme in the car, plus i like the idea that i can have my map lights on in the car at night and it will not mess with my night vision like white lights would. I do know that you can get direct fit in leds from www.superbrightleds.com that will fit directly into your map lights but i am just not sure what size ones i need to get. Do you think you could check it out for me and give me your thoughts gearbox?

Re: LED Blue map lights, help
just get the ones i posted except in blue. they come in any color, just select it from their menu before ordering. i would recommend theledlight.com ones over superbrightleds. oh wait a minute, you have an lx right? i think you have a totally different dome light assembly. and it uses those long style festoon bulbs. you may need to take the bulb out and measure it to get the proper size.

Re: LED Blue map lights, help
and autolumination.com prolly has the brightest ones, altho they are not too reliable. you measure the full bulb length in millimeters.

Re: LED Blue map lights, help
if you dont keep them on too long, go with the hi power ones which will be crazy bright. they get too hot if you leave it on for more than a minute tho. here are the different sizes on this page, be sure to get the right one that matches.

Re: LED Blue map lights, help
go to car specific kits and click 01-05 civic. then at the bottom they have a climate control package for the dials and buttons. the solderless option for pnp led is around $18 i think.

Re: LED Blue map lights, help
no problem. yeah if you get the full climate kit, it will come with the right bulbs. two short bulbs for the dials, and two long bulbs for the buttons. there should be install directions too about how to pull apart the dash and replace the bulbs. and you wont ruin the factory pieces since these are just replacements. that site goes way back, the owner originally was on here asking for those diys and members here helped him put everything together. the leds he uses are wide angle and should be as bright or brighter than stock. im sure the diy mentions this, but be sure to remember to pull out all the oem color filters behind the dials and buttons after you replace the bulbs. its a greenish type plastic filter that you peel off from behind the dials and a plastic insert in the buttons.

I have heard that by buying filter paper to match your light bulbs will make the color much more clean so i may consider buying some from a crafts store.

Re: LED Blue map lights, help
possibly. i used regular office paper for mine and it worked nicely to spread the light, but mine is a custom install. you may not need it if the leds you got are wide enough. i think they will be. adding colored paper will just reduce the brightness since leds only emit a single wavelength of light. its already as pure of a color as you can get.

Re: LED Blue map lights, help
well yes and no. ive had blue before and it didnt bother me much when driving. so long as its not too bright, you will be fine. you can always dim it down too. i have orange now and like it better. but alot of new cars come with blue leds these days. i dont think its a safety issue. even the old 2003 civic hybrid had blue led gauges.

Are you open to a cluster swap or do you just want to replace bulbs?

Re: LED Blue map lights, help
if you just want bulbs, take yours out and post a pic. i prolly have a whole bag of those i can send you some. they twist off from the back and there are 5 bulbs for the backlight.

Re: LED Blue map lights, help
yeah 01-02 uses regular clear bulb. the color is painted onto the back of the cluster face, so changing color will be a bit more involved than changing a bulb. if you get colored leds, they will not shine thru the color filter very well.
Re: LED Blue map lights, help
but if i take off the color filter it will? and i saw something bout putting paper in? like normal computer printer paper or is it a special kind? i feel kinda dumb for askin but i really have no idea.

Re: LED Blue map lights, help
Paper helps to diffuse the light from the LEDs, all you need is regular computer paper. It's also a good idea to sand the tips of the LEDs down to help diffuse the light better also.
Removing the colour is a major pain, but it can be done with acetone, a razor blade and a lot of patience. This is why I asked if you were into a cluster swap, because it's more plug and play than a colour change.

Re: LED Blue map lights, help
basically the whole cluster has to come apart. needles, gauge faces, etc. then on the back of the gauge face you have to carefully remove the paint coating with acetone and qtips til its clear. dont spill any on the front or the gauge face will be ruined. after that you can use leds in the back but it wont look good unless you wire them up custom behind each number, since the factory color filter also had a diffuser layer to spread out the bulb light to make it even. ive done some like this but it requires days of work and trial/error.
Re: LED Blue map lights, help
ok so if i get this do i take the old face off or just put this over? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/01-02...5fAccessories? just wonderin. then all i would have to do is put leds in the needles right? well and the whole take the red out and what not/
