Mohawk!! Need some help with custom box
Mohawk, the only reason I decided to bother you is because I know your pretty good at this stuff. I was wondering if you would be able to help me out. I'm building a custom box for my cousin's S-10 for 2 12" L5 Solo-barics (last years L7s). The goal is completely SPL, so we're going ported. Do you think you can help me design a custom box (need measurments, drawings would be cool too ). He already had a shop build him a box, but the stupid thing is too big wide and doesn't leave much room to push your seats back. Think you could help? Thanks in advance.

well in this case really you have to pull out the ole measuring tape...I don'thave an S-10 laying around that I could measure at this moment.. is this an Ext.cab, Single cab.. he willing to sacrifice the rear seats entirely for sub and an amp?..gimme whatever info you can think of that's relevant and I'll do my best for ya..

hey mohawk while your doing all this free box building just playing but for real my issue is that I am about to put 3 HE2s in my civic and have been having problems trying to figure out the right box to build. I was told that you take w x h x d divided by 1728 and that equals your cubic feet that you need for your subs. I have a sedan if that matters some of my buddies have pitched ideas none I like however holla back

OK.. look in the manual that came with the HE2's and quote me the T/S (Thiele/Small) Parameters and I'll hook you up.. Want SOund quality?.. all out SPL?.. a decent mix of the 2.. wanna go poted or sealed??..

Juat get me the Thiele Small parameters and what he's looking for.. all out SPL.. Sound quality a mix of the 2 ..sealed..ported..I'll give you the air space it needs and port sizes and you figure the dimensions using good ole Math .. giving me measurements won't hugely help because I can't see where it contours and where it can be mounted and such...
Bdubb,
Where will your box be located at? I'm currently in the middle of a (3) RF HE2 install as well (would have been finished if it weren't for the extensive router work). I've got a Coupe, but I think trunk space is the same (don't quote me on that). As far as the measurements, are you doing this by hand or on the computer? Try: Volume Calculator
Well, anyway. Here's an idea if you are interested in maximum trunk space as well as concealability. In building a box that faces forward into the cabin, you only sacrifice about 9" of the trunk if planned correctly. Picture the space behind the seats with (3) 10" (i'm assuming you're going with 10"s?) flush with the plastic opening. The back could be 90 degree angle to mount your amp, considering that maximum heat displacement is attained at 90 degrees. Carpeting is a breeze since you only have to carpet the front (or airbrush) and the back if you extend the box rear panel over the wheel wells.
Just an idea.
Let me know if you want some more detailed specs on the trunk, I've got them all on my puter and can post them if there is a demand.

in Sedans the trunk setup is not the same and 3 forward facing 10's would work..but it's be a bit more custom work that for a coupe.. Also.. given that 10's don't have the greatest low end extension..facing them forward will handicap that even more....if you're going to go with a forward facing setup I would not go with a sealed setup because of thehuge loss in low end extension.. I have forward facing subs currently.. 2 12" Audiomobile EVO-R's ported and tuned really low (27hz) I still have a little too much low end bass..but if I went sealed anything below 50Hz would be suffering a 6db/pctave drop off..
Just lettin ya know..

I have 3 of the HE2 12's model # RFP3212 I could not find the thiele or the small however it does give some enclosure volumes. sealed = 1.25 per sub i think 35.4 liters and vented = 2 or 56.63 liters. Mounting diameter 11 1/8 mounting depth 6 5/16 . rms/peak 400/800. As far as SQ and SPL I would like to have some bragging rights we are going to dynamat the whole car and I also got fanatic qs for the front. However I dont want it to sound nasty I listen to rap,hip hop and r&b thanks
Hey mohawk if I went 42.5 wide 14 high and 11 inches deep minus the 3 subs displacement at .085 doesnt that put me at 3.5? or am i crazy I used this formula (H X W X D) dIVIDED BY 1,728
i know the hx2's hit very hard ported but i put my power series in the same box and it wasn't very happy so i have them sealed. but like mowhawk said they need Huge boxes for ported so just stick with sealed cause you'll never find the space for 6 cubic ft.

While we are at it....can you help me with a box for 3 HX2's. The specs for them are here. I'm not sure if I should go ported or sealed and what dimensions. Also, how much should I push to each sub?
ok well you should think about getting 3 POWER hx2 12's cause they can be in a much smaller encloser than the regular hx2's and they sound better in a sealed enclosure than the others. its just money right they can handle 1000 rms per sub.

With 3 subs like that it leaves you little options for amps..Ideally to get good load matching you'd need 3 amps.. Generally only Dual 6ohm subs can be used in treo's with good results...Now if youwant 2 monster subs like that..and feed them the power they deserve you'l be needing a H/O alernator.. if you wanna give em about 300Wrms each you'd need a MMATS D100HC amp 1200Wrms at .66ohm.. which means you need 3 DVC 4-ohm subs..
And at 4.2 cubes for all 3 subs they'll be pretty musical..still have good low end response and thump pretty hard.
