Sound Quality
Ok, Opinion of people who have done this, or heard this:
A car computer playing mp3s through an amp without a HU
Is it good/bad/average quality? Should I stick with a HU and run it through there?

ive done this, the problem with this is that MP3's compress the "inaudible" sounds of a wave file.......
unfortunately this presents problems! many frequencies a car sub has a response for is in those ranges. when i played mp3s with my subs, teh bass was weak and wouldnt go as low as when i played cd's. also, cymbals, which cover a WIDE range of frequencies sounded intermitent and choppy.
if you have crappy tweets, that play muddy, then maybe this can cover a bit for that, but your not getting "sound Quality" (which is acurate representation of sound in your environment) and your bass will be flat out lacking.
not worth the trouble, if your into SQ, or SPL.
mp3's only real advantage is that you can fit 79347589439569434 songs on a single CD, so you dont have to have 423 CD's in your car like me. you can keep your crap on 3 CD's and have a couple more of your good stuff you want good SQ on.

YEAAH I was thinking of that new SB Audigy yup yup...
Ok, WhiteRabbit I totally hear you, but what I reallllllly want to get at is, Is the SQ of a computer-to-amp-to-speaker less, comparable, better than a burned cd with mp3 on a HU capable of playing mp3s, ALSO How is it compared to converting them back to WAV and burning 14 songs worth?

I usually encode my CD's at 256kbps/44kHz/stereo/HQ and they sound really good. if you encode the mp3's at a lower quality like 96kpbs or 128kpbs, then you definitely are not going to get the full range of frequencies that a CD does. I still prefer CD's over mp3's though.

I had volume problems of ALL KINDS. there is pretty much no way to send a perfect signal to teh amp, and have it mesh with your amp gains, while keeping resonable levels of quality and comparable volume levels with your cd-player, your dreamcast, what have you.
my setup was not perfect by any means, however, and it probably can work, but sending a signal through so many wires, plus degredation of sending a signal through so many adapters and plugs (how long do YOUR headphones last?) you have to consider all this.
Done right, it will work decently, people do it occasionally, tho not too common, it CAN be done. its just alot of work, if you think it will be worth it, go ahead....
heres what you should do. park in the garage, and haul out your entire computer there too. get a 1/8 inch to RCA converter, and plug your computer into the inputs on all your amps. if you have a pioneer deck running on deck power, you can use the deck powered speakers by plugging into teh preouts. they are inputs if you feed a signal that way. (look in teh manual how to set it to AUX mode) otherwise, i dunno what other brands can do this......
now listen to some MP3's. you might have to set your gains again, and adjust the computer volume a bit, but if you like what you hear, it might be worth the trouble of trying to get your computer to mesh with a cd_player.
you know, i wanted to put a computer cd-rom in my car forawhile..... would have made a great drink holder...
