Question New Civic, Need Quick Help! (Cigarette Plug)

Hey I just got a 2004 Honda Civic EX Coupe. Right when I got it, the first thing I noticed was that NO iPod adapters that use the Cigarette lighter work (I guess it really isn't a cigarette lighter) I have purchased many in car iPod chargers only to return them after failure. Also, I have tried to plug in a tom-tom charger to the plug, still no luck. After further inspection, it looks like there is a sleeve inside of the "Cigarette Lighter" itself that is stopping the iPod plugs from going fully into it. Did some research online, not much came up about this problem, can anyone provide me with a simple and hopefully CHEAP way to fix this. I have a Monster FM Transmitter+Car Charger and an iPod Touch 2g (which does not get charged by the cable ) Also, no cassette player so cant take the simple way out.. QUICK HELP PLEASE!!

is the car key in ACC or ON position? thats the only time the socket will get power. you do need to shove it in all the way too so it makes contact.

Re: New Civic, Need Quick Help! (Cigarette Plug)

The problem is that the plug does not go in all the way, there is something stopping it from going in, can I remove this? Once the plug is about 1 inch into the socket, the socket gets smaller stopping it from going in further. It is like there is a sleeve that is too small for what I want.

Sorry, I don't know how to explain it very well...

Edit: After a little more searching, I found USA SPEC and their iPod integration. I will probably be purchasing this to play my iPod Touch through the radio, but I am still hoping to be able to use the Cigarette Lighter to charge my Tom-Tom

i bet someone used a crappy product in the socket before and it got stuck inside when they pulled it out. try and remove whatever is blocking the hole, or just get a new 12v socket from honda and swap it out. i dont think they cost much and it just unplugs from the back.

k, I am trying to remove the blockage, but am having problems taking out the center console trim, I am referring to the certified Honda Installation Guide for CD changer which shows me how to remove it, but i just can't seem to get it out, i am pulling really hard and it feels like it is going to break, which I definitely do not want..

You should be able to remove whatever is blocking insertion of the plug from the front without removing the bezel.

Look in with a good light and use a pick or small flat blade screwdriver to see if the broken part remaining will move at all.

Re: New Civic, Need Quick Help! (Cigarette Plug)

alright, after trying to remove it, I thought it would be easier to just take out the whole center console out. I got it out, now I am trying to get the whole cigarette lighter out to have a smaller piece to work with, I cant seem to get the lighter out itself. Anyone know how to do this for 2004?

EDIT: Ok, after a few hours of trying, I managed to pry the object out of the socket. Now the only problem is that I blew the fuse to the socket. Gotta dish out a few bucks to buy one.. no biggie. Also I will probably be replacing the socket with a REAL cigarette lighter since this socket is definitely not one.. The plugs are very hard to get in and out of this socket, I see how someone got the plug stuck in there. Any suggestions on where to get a new Cigarette Lighter and how to get the current socket out of the console, it does not come out with a simple push.

Re: New Civic, Need Quick Help! (Cigarette Plug)

i ended up buying the "ashtray and lighter" accessory trim piece from honda for my 2002 civic and it also came with an upgraded plug and play wire harness. its much better than the standard one and comes with the lighter too. there is prolly one for 2004 also. the dealer should be able to look it up. paid like $80 for mine but i think its worth it.

Alright, if it costs that much I will probably go to a junkyard and see if they have anything similar.. Hopefully they do because I don't wanna pay $80

Re: New Civic, Need Quick Help! (Cigarette Plug)

I checked on the online parts shop and it is $79 which is more than I am willing to spend on this small project. You have any tips on removing the current socket from the console itself without destroying the console?

Re: New Civic, Need Quick Help! (Cigarette Plug)

its tricky, you need some pliars and try to push it out from the back. since youre not saving the socket anyway, use a knife and carefully shave off the plastic tabs holding it on from the back.

Thread-jacking eh?

A Honda Dealership will be able to look up the code if you provide the serial. Don't let them tell you otherwise.

Edit: You may need to provide proof of ownership of the car before they will do so.
