Serious HU/electrical issues...

So, a couple weeks ago I had my HU stolen. They pulled out my old alpine rather crudely, damaging my entire dash, center console, and seriously screwing up the electrical connections (esp. the accessory line). They cut the factory radio harness behind the connector, and the accessory line shorted out. I guess I'm lucky I'm not left with a pile of ashes considering...

Anyway, fast forwarding a few weeks... got everything repaired and bought a new alpine IVA-W505. Did the install a few days ago, and everything went fine. Yesterday I bought an an alpine full-speed connection for my ipod, and when I put everything back, no power. checked both the radio/accessory fuse, and the backup. all good. the problem was in the accessory line, which they did a terrible job rewiring after my HU got stolen. rewired it. power back to the new HU.

The problem is now the hard-button controls only work for about thirty seconds before I lose control of them. The soft-button (screen controls) work fine. Also the recirculate and ac buttons have lost illumination. Any ideas. Is something internal fried? Is something still wrong with the accessory line. Help! This is becoming a nightmare...

Thanks

Re: Serious HU/electrical issues...

make sure there are not any open wires or parts of the wire that are stripped. theres a ton of metal behind the dash. take the trim piece out several inches or as much as you can so the wires are loose and try to see if it works better. dont play with the wires in the back tho since there may be live wires. the recirc and ac buttons have their own bulbs, its possible they burnt out or a fuse blew. do the dial lights still work? i think you need to very carefully inspect the wiring behind there and make sure they look okay without any cuts.

Re: Serious HU/electrical issues...

dials still light up... the problem with the ac and recirc lights started when I got the HU working again after the power issue. My main concern is obviously the new deck. a poorly connected wire shouldn't cause the issues I'm having right? I'm hoping it's just I wire, but reality is setting in... question is, what caused the issue? current surge from the shoddy wiring? I don't want to use the warranty, and fry the replacement...

... and upon quick inspection, no exposed wires... everything is insulated or covered with elect. tape. I'll really have to give it a good look tomorrow though. I don't have enough light to be 100% positive.

Re: Serious HU/electrical issues...

just try replacing the two bulbs for the buttons. they are on a separate circuit otherwise the whole dash wouldve gone black if it was serious. the bulb sockets just unscrew and come out from the back piece. see if they look burnt and just replace with new ones.
