mowhawk: orion subs?

Hey, question for ya... My friend just got in possession of an Orion 10" sub for free. It's 1200W max and 600W rms. I've heard of Orion, but I dont know anything about them at all, so I turn to you. I picked it up and it weighed like 50lbs. My question is are these subs any good? It seems pretty heavy, so should I need thicker than 3/4" mdf for a box? And do you have any suggestions for the enclosure size. He wants to focus mainly on sound quality. Thanks.

Ahh sweet he landed himself an Orion HCCA 10 .. great sub... I'm at my g/f's so I don't have my box plotting software handy..but I'll get back to you tomorrow with an SQ optimized enclosure.. just a note though..you'll need at least a 500 Wrms amp for that sub..theya re a bit power hungry..but that single will bump HARD..is the cone all rounded?

Haha, well i have to admit i dunno what you mean. I know that the cone isnt as deep as my 12w3. All i know is that the magnet is BIG. Thanks for getting that info on the enclosure. He was just planning on using that sub and putting 600Wrms to it, but i've been trying to get him to get another one and run 1000Wrms to them. Should he stick with the one or should get another? He can get it real cheap. His concern isnt to bump as hard as possible, just REALLY good bass. He doesnt want to tear his car apart...

well with 1 of em and 600 watts he'll have some rattled for sure .. them subs are monsters..2 with 1000 watts. well then he'd need to invest in a roll of RAAM mat and sound deaden the heck outta his trunk.

Double checked it here..is this the sub??

Or is this one it??

Soon as you lemme know I'll give ya some box dimensions..

if it's the bottom one..he should sell them..those are all out SPL subs.. he suspension on them is so stiff that they won't play well below 40Hz at all... if your wants SQ..those are really not the subs for it..

hiya! i saw this post and wanted to put in my 2 cents! ive had 4 Orion extremes (dvc) running off ~300w constant. now im much more into clarity, depth, and cleanliness and i have 2 Orion xtreme series 2, about 2 years old. now, they arent hcca's, but they are dvc and are ranked at about 250rms. i like them a lot. right now i got them running off of an Alpine 300 w 4 ch amp. nice sound, but im just lazy...i had my pheonix gold 350xz running them and that thing THUMPS! this was all hooked up in my last car (94 camry V6LE) and in the civic, it is SO much tighter (smaller trunk which is not closed off to the cab, better built box, etc.). ANYWAY! like 'hawk said, the orions are pretty nice if you have power to run 'em. and those are some pretty hungry subs. i like the brand for the money, and they are pretty nice (quality, spL, power handling).

Hmm. I dont know how much these subs go for... What do you suggest he get to replace this sub? Like i said, he's looking for SQ, but SPL is important as well, and he wants to keep it around 500 as much as possible.

the 12's want about 1000 RMS, i dunno about the 10's. HCCA is well known for sounding like ***, if you want SQ, look elsewhere. orion subs have no low end, but killer upper bass. the ideal sub to blend with your fronts. the SPL of the HCCA is insane, but they really need some juice to get them flowing.

i dont know when power compression hits, but they can take well in exess of 600 RMS and not get thermally damaged, so you want boatloads of power (id get an earthquake thrust700, 750 watts or so if the sub is 4 ohm) but yeah. a guy i know installed 4 HCCA 15's in teh back of an extended cab. needless to say thre was ZERO room back there after box, but jesus christ!

if SQ is teh primary goal, sell taht sub and get something else. but if he doesnt sit in alot of cars, i think he will be greatly (greatly, greatly) satisfied with this sub.

Yeah, since his primary concern is SQ, I'm just gonna suggest he sell it for something else. Any suggestions?

yeah, 3/4 inch MDF. also be sure to brace the s h i t outta that box, cause that monster pressurizes.

just cause you got an SPL beast dont mean you have to throw SQ out the window. if you can get a flat response, sweeps will still sound good, its just the accuracy that should suffer a bit.

unfortunately, ORION doesnt supply the t/s parameters for this sub online, does he have the sheet for it? mowhawk or myself could easily model up a nice sealed or ported box up for you (you can do it too! www.linearteam.org, get winISD) but we will need the t/s parameters.

If you want to skip that and go for a factory rec box, then you can check out www.orioncaraudio.com, install alley => enclosures => page 5.

its not exactly an SQ box, but not exactly an SPL box either. should be fairly decent for that woofer, you can see the response plot too. It is a bandpass box for a single HCCA 10, and looks to be a fairly well designed box. orion doesnt just have factory reccommended box for whatever, it actually looks like it was well thought out and designed.

"Exterior Dimensions
12" High x 16" Deep x 23.2" Wide

Vent
3" wide x 4.25" high x 11.26" long

Fb
40 Hz

F3
33.16 Hz

To get high output with good EXTENSION out of a single driver in a Moderate Sized Enclosure. The HCCA 10" Subwoofer offers Exceptional output that will work in almost any type of vehicle. Easily outperforming up to three or more standard 10" drivers.

This enclosure at 1.5 cu. ft. offers a Fb of 40 Hz and F3 of 33.16 Hz. Between the build of the driver and the robust 1" construction of the Enclosure, this team should well outlast the car it is installed in.

A great combination for this driver would be the HCCA 225 G4 or XTR 500. For the crushing output, try the HCCA 250 G4 or XTR 900.

Note: Use radius bit on router to round inside/outside port edges."

Orion also has a picture of how the box will look, you can replace one of the panels with plexiglass to make it look REALLY slick (.75 plexi or better, of course) Where are you located? Id love to build/hear a box like this, since I've never built a custom bandpass box before!

If he insists of sealed/ported, and you want a dead flat response, you will either have to supply us with teh t/s parameters, or send orion an email tho.

lemme know whats up!
