new to the AMP scene, need some help choosing
alright guys,
basically my gf is going to be buying me an amp soon as an anniversary present ( 3 years
) but I really don't know too much about amps, as I've never had one before. Right now I have self installed my Pioneer 3900-MP cd player, Alpine type S 6x9s (260W), and Alpine type S 6.5s (240W). Obviously they need more power!!! What features should I be looking for in an amp? Anyone got any suggestions for good amps at good prices. I would like to keep everything Alpine but if I can't, it's not a big deal. She will likely want to spend between $175-$250, so keep that in mind-
ps. I am going to eventually put in either 2 10" Alpine type R subs or one Alpine type r 12" sub (1500W peak)... depending on money and your opinions.
Thanks in advance for any help

be sure you only look at the RMS wattage of each speaker and not peak ratings. do the same for the amp. basically you want an amp that will deliver at least 1/2 of the max RMS power rating of the speaker, but ideally 3/4 of max. so if the speaker is 60w rms, you should have an amp that gives out at least 30w rms per channel. now if you have 4 speakers, thats 4 channels and you would need a 4 channel amp with a minimum of 30x4 w rms per channel. alpine makes great amps. im running a small alpine mrp-f240 i got for $200 thats around 30wx4 and im powering 4 infinity speakers that are 60w max input each. sounds amazing. you also need an amp wiring kit as well, maybe an extra $50. when you add subs, you will need a new amp for them thats separate from the speaker amp.

well for sound quality i would recommend JL audio but they tend to be on the expensive side but you do get what you pay for but sometimes you can get deals at your local car audio store not circuit city.alpine makes good stuff to i have there MRP-F450 V-POWER running my MB QUART components also the OHM stability is more important then RMS how many ohms are your speakers .also good quality wires can make or break your sound quality so don't cheap out. you should think about upgrading your electrical system this is were it starts to get exspensive theres alot more to it besides throwing a couple amps in.and remember run the amp power wire on the opposite side from the speaker wire to cut down on electrical noise interference .this is my setup .

if ur lady really loves u (like if she asks u if she can put a banana in ur bung hole and u let her do it) she will buy you a pair of Zapco amps...one to run ur components and a monoblock amp...but if we're talkin about the kind of love that is all lubby dubby, then get an Alpine for ur comps and a Hifonics Brutus BX1500D for the sub. Just let her rape u wit the banana so u can get the GOOD ****! LOL

and when u get the Zapco's don't 4get to post pre/post install pics!
Re: new to the AMP scene, need some help choosing
alright, thanks for the input.
My 6x9s are 85w and my 6.5s are 80w, so I should get a 4 channel amp that puts out 40-65w per channel, right?
Now I'm starting to think about the sub I'll be putting in eventually, likely a 12" Alpine Type R, 1500w peak/500w continuous... so I imagine that'll require a mono channel amp that puts out 250-365w, is that right?
and oh yeah... my tweeters kinda hiss a bit when the volume is loud and theres no music on, like if I switch to AUX without anything plugged in and then turn the volume up. Any ideas why or how to fix this? The tweeters came with my Alpine Type S 6.5s. These

Get a 4-CH amp rated around 50w RMS per channel so you have some breathing room when u crank it up loud....and about the sub....definitely get a monoblock that can put out at least 500 RMS..for example, the Hifonics Brutus BX1500D:
500W RMS x 1 @ 4-Ohm
750 x 1 @ 2-Ohm
1500 x 1 @ 1-Ohm....as long as the sub has Dual Voice Coils, the sub can be wired to the amp as I explained it above, and push it HARD!
