Cheap in dash Monitors

I'm thinking about putting in a computer, because I would love to have my 200+ gig music library to be mobile with me.

The only thing that I would need is an in dash monitor. I was looking at a whole bunch on ebay, but I don't know if the cheap no-name brands are worth getting.

I would love to spend under $150-200, shipped. VGA input isn't necessary, but I suppose it would be better. I should be able to get a decent resolution through regular s-video/composite video off a PCIE card.

I saw the touch screen ones, and I don't necessarily need it. I saw a PYLE brand 7" flip out touch screen : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=400036759509
and an Eonon non-touch screen http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...3AIT&viewitem=

Also these two no-name brands (as if the others aren't) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...3AIT&viewitem=
and
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...3AIT&viewitem=

Has anyone had any experience with any of these brands? I was thinking of getting either the Pyle or Eonon, mainly because they seem like they would be better quality, and the styling goes with the car better. Although everytime I see Pyle on ebay I can't help but thinking... "pyle of ****." Don't know, because I've never bought anything from them. They seem to make a lot of different things, and their MSRPs on their website seem competitive with other name brands.

Is it worth it? Or is it just going to break right after the 1 year warranty is over?

Re: Cheap in dash Monitors

the problem with cheap monitors like the ones you have link is that the colors arent very great. they actually suck.

also, the brightness on them are very low. most of them claim they can be @ 400 cd/m2 but in reality, you'll be lucky if they make it to 200.

but the worst is probably the fact that they dont have a very wide viewing angle so you'll see alot of the contrast and not the actual pix.

Re: Cheap in dash Monitors

I was looking at the viewing angles on some of them, 45 degrees, 50 degrees, and I was like, wow these really suck ***. but I figured all i'd have to do is lean over a little to see it better. but the bad color would really **** me off.

I have seen on here that the Lilliput flip out touchscreen is very good, and its not too expensive I guess. around $300 or so.

I might have to use one of my other credit cards that I haven't used in a while. :-P

Re: Cheap in dash Monitors

just to add my .02 cents.

trust me u DO NOT want to use a comsite or s-video input. it sucks; makes it all fuzzy and u can bairly read text unless it fills 1/4 the screen. no sence in getting a high quality monitor and video card just to reduce it those those. spend the monney, buy an extenton and use eather VGA or DVI.

Another thing, If you get a cheap monitor good luck seeing it in the daytime. Spring a few hundred and get a good liliput or xenarc.

Even at a lower resolution? Like 800x600? I know what you're talking about, I watch movies on my tv from my computer, and its very hard to ready text on it without a magnifier program. I totally forgot about that problem.

I was doing a lot of research/comparison, and I found a Jensen VM9312 for $268-$300.
http://mobile.jensen.com/jensen/Jens...DUCT_ID=VM9312

This would be perfect, but it probably won't be good for a computer. But, I do have a VGA to Composite/S-vid/Component converter, and if I remember right, it worked pretty well, but I don't remember if text looked any better on it. I have to dig it out and test it.

Re: Cheap in dash Monitors

so I think I'm going to get this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...:WNAFP:US:1123
which is the same as this:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...ctiveda8725-20

The ebay one says the screen is 400 cd/m2, while the thermaltake one says 280 cd/m2. I'll say its 300.

Either way, I think I'll be happy, as I don't get much glare from my Mio C320 GPS, which a very cheap, mediocre unit, and I don't see how that would be more than 300 cd/m2, although I can't find anything on that GPS with the specs. I use it all day every day, and I have no problem reading it in sunlight, even with polarized sunglasses on.

not to mention that the colors and lack of labeling/stickers, is what I'd like to see on a unit.

edit: On the ebay page, it says +-65 degrees horizontal viewing angle, and in the manual it says 40. ew.

...I'm reading a review on the Thermaltake unit, and it says the viewing angles are very good...wtf. All the reviews I seen say that the unbranded chinese ones, which are the same, seem like they have a better screen. I think I'm going to get this. for $280 shipped on ebay, i think its worth it. considering I've been seeing really bad reviews on the LILLIPUT GL-701 which is $40 more.

Re: Cheap in dash Monitors

Ok. I'm getting this. I've read a lot of reviews, and all of them are very good for this screen, while I've seen a lot of problems with the screens and motors on the Lilliputs.

http://www.short-circuit.com/product/VMI70.html

for $275, I don't think I can go wrong.

Re: Cheap in dash Monitors

DONT DO IT! I bought two of them, neither one looked good one of them came with a separate amp that i could only put i the glove box. I'm sure it looks nice and pretty and all, but don't lowball yourself on electronics. I can honestly say they dont last long. Its like buying the fake iphone. I bought a jenson VM series for $200, i've had it for 3 years.

Re: Cheap in dash Monitors

HAHAHHA........this whole time i though he was talking bout a headunit and wanting a headunit.....HAHAHHAHAHA

reading>me

OK........SO BAK ON TOPIC...

if you are on a budget, then i would suggest getting this screen:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Lilliput-7-EBY70...3A1%7C294%3A50

its an excellent screen, i have had, molded it to my dash, and sold it to sniperscount (who is also doing a carputer built).

NOTE: the price has DRAMATICALLY been reduced. this screen use to be 230shipped.

however, if you are willing to spend about 50 extra bucks, i would highly HIGHLY suggggest getting this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Lilliput-629GL-7...3A1%7C294%3A50

i currently have this model and the color is a bit deeper, and the quality is made a bit better. i would highly recomend saving up the extra 40$ (u said ur max price was "200") and getting this one.

any other questions about carputer feel free to ask me.
