Help!!!! Amp Wont Power Subs

What up fellas...i recently upgraded my sound system and bought two 10" alpine type r subs...The subs are 3000 watts peak...and 1000watts rms combined. A buddy of mine recommended a Hifonics mono amplifier (BXi1208D 1200W ).....the amp gives out 1200 rms at 1ohm.....900 watts rms at 2ohm. Since my subs are dual voive coils 2ohms....i wired them up to a 2ohm load so that i can get those 900rms watts from the amp. ok so i upgraded the power and ground wires from 4gauge to 1/0 gauge. I finish the install and i can hear and feel the subs moving but it seems like the amp is only giving it 200 watts of power....i put all the bass up on the amp and radio and still im not getting full power....i double chcked all connections and fuses and everything seems fine....im using high quality rcas and speaker wires....im pretty good with car audio but im just kinda confused now. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Help!!!! Amp Wont Power Subs

Double check your at 2 ohm. People always screw that up and run it like 8 ohm on accident. Not saying you don't know what you're doing but that is the first thing to come to mind.

Ill keep thinking of other reasons throughout the day to try and help.

Check your ground wires. Makes sure your actually getting at least 14 volts with the car on.

Re: Help!!!! Amp Wont Power Subs

What deck do you have? If you are only pushing a 1v signal through your rcas it would not be that loud.

it cant be the head unit cause i was pushing 600watts rms before i upgraded to the alpines...im starting to think that mayb the amp is defective......everything works ....when i turn on the car the amp turns on and i feel the subs moving.....the only way they get loud is if i put the gain alllllll the way up.......if i put the gain halfway u can barely hear the subs.....im gonna check later on to make sure im getting 14 volts.

Re: Help!!!! Amp Wont Power Subs

You could go get a signal processor (corrected, i misspoke when i said crossover), for example a memphis audio 16-X02.

It will up the voltage on the rca output from 2 to up to 7. Basically everytime you double the voltage, you double how loud they are. It is also better than putting up your gain.

You can take the amp to a car audio store and they should be able to test it.

A crossover doesn't give you more voltage. A crossover helps you provide your speakers with cleaner sound by eliminating frequencies at different levels. For example, a crossover for a amp (used for a sub) you would use a crossover to filter out the high, and mid frequencies, and just use the low frequency sound for the bass. I personally have my sub set at 80hz. So any sound that is coming for the deck that is over 80 hz doesn't get played by my sub.

I know you were trying to help, but if you don't know what something does, don't make up stuff. Google is your friend.

Re: Help!!!! Amp Wont Power Subs

Yea good point...a cross over has nothing to do with my problem...my amp has a built in crossover anyway....I have came to the conclusion that the problem is either the headunit or the rca cables.

Re: Help!!!! Amp Wont Power Subs

Lol sorry Im writing a paper, i meant a signal processor, for example the one i mentioned above. It has a crossover on it to adjust frequencys and i misspoke. The signal processor like the one above WILL adjust the voltage. Thankyou for pointing that out. I have the memphis one above and it makes a massive difference when you have a shitty headunit putting out 2 v. from the rca outputs. I believe when i had my old headunit i went from 2v. (stock headunit output from the rca output) to 3 1/2 v and i didnt even want to turn it up more.

Re: Help!!!! Amp Wont Power Subs

I found it online, it is 2v for the RCA output. Are you planning to get a new head unit? If so you may just want to get a head unit with 4v. and that will make a fairly big difference in itself.
