Reuse equipment from old car or get all new stuff?
Reuse equipment from old car or get all new stuff?
I'm selling my old car and pulled everything out. I'm wondering if I should reuse anything or buy all new stuff for my 2001 Civic EX.
The head unit is a Pioneer DEH-P8600MP with a bad internal amp (which is how I got a great deal on it). However that means I have no choice but to amp the speakers in the Civic, which means I'll probably need to replace them.
I have two MB Quart DKD116 6.5" 2-way speakers from the old car which sound pretty damn good, but I was thinking a component system would be better, especially since I have an EX which already has a spot for the tweeters.
The amp I have is an Audiobahn A6004T which can output 75rmsx4. I'd like to put it under the drivers side seat for a completely stealth installation but that hump kind of gets in the way. The amp is about 11"x12".
I currently have a Pioneer Premier DEH-P750MP powering the stock speakers right now and I don't really think it sounds that bad. It sounds much better than it did with the factory head unit.
So here are some options that I've been considering (listed from least to most expensive):
The main thing I'm not sure about is if I keep the MB Quarts for the front can/should I use the factory tweeters in addition to the tweeters that come with the speakers or would they blow or not sound good? Also can I amp stock speakers at all or are they guaranteed to blow even if I don't put them too loud? I don't really want to keep the P750MP because it has been having trouble reading CD-Rs lately and also because it's hard to see in the sun.
Also, I should point out that I have no intention of ever putting subs in the car, so ideally I'd like speakers that can put out a lot of bass on their own (the MB Quarts were pretty good in this regard). Decisions, decisions.

- Just keep it how it is and sell everything else.
- Sell everything including the old head unit and use the money to buy a new head unit with more features. Keep stock speakers.
- Keep the P750MP put the MB Quarts in the front and leave the back stock. Amp only the front.
- Replace the head unit with the P8600MP and put the MB Quarts in the front and leave the back stock, amp both, and hope they don't blow with the amp.
- Replace the head unit with the P8600MP and put the MB Quarts in the front and find matching MB Quart speakers for the back.
- Replace the head unit with the P8600MP and put the MB Quarts in the front and find matching MB Quart speakers for the back.
- Replace the head unit with the P8600MP and get some Alpine SPS-600C component speakers for the front and Alpine SPS-69C3 for the back.
- Some other aftermarket speakers or something else entirely.

Re: Reuse equipment from old car or get all new stuff?
My personal notices:
Stock speakers sound good from an amplifed deck
Amplified aftermarkets sound excellent
Off my alpine deck running the stock tweeters and 2 alpine type-r 6.5"s in the doors (each getting 100rms), the tweeters max out and get distorted way before the speakers do.
all in all, id go for a set of components.

Re: Reuse equipment from old car or get all new stuff?
Well it turns out that one of the speakers in the rear deck was already blown so I'm definitely going to replace the speakers. I already bought the Alpine SPS-600C components for the front and was going to buy the SPS-69C3 for the back but Crutchfield says it doesn't fit. I talked to customer service and the guy said that many of the 6x9 speakers don't fit because the tweeter gets in the way. He said I would need an extra .5". Can anyone confirm?
If they don't fit I guess I might spend the extra money and get the SPR-69C.

Re: Reuse equipment from old car or get all new stuff?
i really dont know. some people on this site have found a perfect fit with either of those speakers. they say it clears the torsion bar, but just barely. others have had to elimate/move the torsion bar. eliminating is not reccommended.
Re: Reuse equipment from old car or get all new stuff?
Well looking at Alpine's site the SPR-69C's mounting depth is actually 2-15/16" as opposed to 3". I'm not sure how much of a difference that would make though. What speakers are you using?
Re: Reuse equipment from old car or get all new stuff?
i have type-r's in the doors running off an alpine mrp-f450. I have stock pioneers powered off the deck, but htey are really phased out cause i have subs in the back.
Re: Reuse equipment from old car or get all new stuff?
I think alpine type s 6X9 would fit in the rear deck, there not large speakers. I personally have jl vr 6X9s in the back and they hit the torsion bar but nothing too serious and those speakers are massive(i had to modify the rear deck to get them in), so i don't really think you would encounter any problems. Do you have a coupe or sedan? The coupe has 6X9s in the rear deck but the sedan is 6.5 all around.
Re: Reuse equipment from old car or get all new stuff?
Mine is the coupe. I went ahead and put in the head unit and amp since I'm home right now and have a garage to work in. I'll be back in school next week and didn't want to do it outside in the parking lot.
I quickly made a car domain site to post the pics: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3076986
Let me know what you all think.
It actually sounds really good with the stock speakers. I have the gain all the way down but it can still get loud enough to blow them so I'll just be careful until my new speakers come in.
