Need code for audio head unit for 2001 ex
Hi I am new to this forum, but it was recommended....I had to get a jump, as my battery died. After it was started, the radio stopped working, as it needs a code. I called Honda and they said I needed to take the radio out, and to look on the back...Instead of dealing with that, I was wondering if anyone knew it off hand??? Any help would be appreciated, thanks so much!

They are different for all head units you will have to take in to a dealership for them to give it to you. they need the serial# of the headunit to look it up for you could either take it out or in your manual it tells you how to get it to show you the Serial# on the lcd. it is by pushing certain buttons. not sure which ones. hope this helps

Look through all your paperwork and documents from when you got the car, it's a little card that has the radio's code. Each radio has a different code I'm pretty sure.
Re: Need code for audio head unit for 2001 ex
There's a little known fact about our cars and radio codes...
For most Civics, the code is somewhere on the car. it's going to be an unlabeled 5-digit code, with the digits ranging from 1-6. Mine was on the inside of my glove box. Some are in the engine bay, fuse box, trunk, etc. It varies from car to car, for simple security reasons.
Just take a look around. It'll save you a trip to the dealer and probably some money.

YAY! Thank you! I hate going to dealerships, because it seems ridiculously expensive...It's like they look up in their price book. Female + Blonde = Jacked up price.
I appreciate it!

Sure. Like I said, it's going to take some detective work, but it should help you out. There's lots of little tricks like that built into our cars.

Okay I just looked in all the places cited, and still didn't see it - fuse box, trunk, hood, and glove compartment (in a skirt on a windy day across from a construction site nonetheless!) soooo i'm so frustrated. Are there any other places yall can think of? thanks again for everything!
Re: Need code for audio head unit for 2001 ex
man can we get pics of said skirt on a windy day!! but back to your problem.
I took mine to the stealership and they asked me for my ownership papers and the vin and they gave it to me without any money exchange. Also look on the side of the door it may be there also. look in your owners manual it may be in there as well.

Are most manuals in the trunk with the spare? Does it have to be original dealership (its in nc i'm in sc)?
I do have my vin though I know that's on my registration...Thanks!
oh sorry, there wasn't a photo shoot i'm aware of (hopefully

get the serial number off of the back of the radio and the VIN. With that info the dealership should be able to get you the code. There are numerous threads on this topic, more lately than I've seen here in a while. Search through those and you should find some more info that may help you out. You can also search for the DIY head unit install and that will help you get the radio out.
Re: Need code for audio head unit for 2001 ex
no the manual should be in the glove box. And no it doesn't have to be the original dealership. Take it to any Honda dealership and they should do the same!! Oh and for the photo shoot hit me up girl we can take one ourselves!!!
Re: Need code for audio head unit for 2001 ex
Thanks for the offer!!! But don't I need to pull the radio out of my car to do get that number. I don't know how and was trying to avoid that...
I swear I'm not this dumb on other subjects btw.

OK then. I missed that part.
If you're going to have to pull out the radio, the best option is probably going to be get a Chilton or Haynes manual from your local Auto parts store. It'll help you on this job and just about anything else you might need to do.

Based on my personal experience, you do not have to pull the radio. I bought my car used, and the manual that came with it was from a different year civic. I think my 04 came with an 01 manual someone just threw in there. However, when i called my dealership, they had me push a couple more buttons, and the radio displayed two sets of number. One was "high" and like 5 numbers long, and the other was "low" and also about five numbers long. I have no idea what this was, or how you get them, but when I gave them to the guy at the dealership over the phone, he put them in the computer, and gave me the 5 digit unlock code, which i've just committed to memory. It works, and i just used it the other day to unlock the radio after having the alternator replaced. Based on my reading in other threads on this site, it is somewhat unusual for the dealer to give the code out over the phone, tho. If anyone can tell me what the hell those two sets of the numbers i got off the radio display were, i'd appreciate it.
additionally, i've done a significant amount of work to the car, including working in both fuse boxes, removing the glove compartment, and doing stuff in the trunk, and i have never found the sticker that others are talking about with the code on it.

Just thought of this. Since cars get bought and sold and moved all over the country, it's possible that an NC car could end up in NY. Hell, mine was originally sold in FL. Just give the dealership I use a call, and tell them you're local. They'll prolly just hook you up with the code over the phone like they did for me. Dealership is John Holtz Honda. Call 585.334.0880 and ask for Honda service.

ok, same thing happened to me. I replaced my battery and my radio no longer worked.
Now keep in mind, (i don't know if this makes a difference), i have a special edition civic which came with a 6-disc changer.
It was a while ago, but from what i remember he told me there was nothing i could do at home so i had to come to the dealership so they could use a tool* (possibly?) to discover the code. He then printed out the code for me to stick in my glove box.
This was absolutely, completely F.R.E.E.
(maybe it wasn't a tool i can't remember, but he bascially said i had to come in)
