Newbie Install Question

Hi guys if there's a specific forum/thread for this kind of question please direct me there. I'm gonna attempt a HU swap (which I figure should be simple)

When instructions tell you to "tap into a wire" e.g. 12V or ACC, what kind of connection do you do?

Example: I'm considering replacing my Alpine CDA-9856 (installed by BB) with IVA-D105 in my 05 EX AT Sedan

When I find the brake and e-brake wires, how do I connect the deck wiring to them?

I also want to add the KCE-300BT module, which has a separate power harness? Again, how is this meant to be connected? To the factory wires, HU wiring harness?

Please also let me know if this is too much for my first install. I'm pretty good at following directions and understand electrical principles, but am wary of making any major modifications.

Thanks!

Re: Newbie Install Question

Is it a flip out DVD unit? And it's asking you to hook the wiring to the parking brake wire?

You have 2 options:
a) hook it to the parking brake wire like suggested and your install will be legal. You will not be able to watch video while the car is in motion.

--EDIT--
b) please do not discuss, suggest, or endorse illegal activity.
thanks,

I DO NOT suggest option b as that would be illegal and not condoned on this site. However it is possible. For option a, get some of these wire taps. Wire a goes into one side, wire b goes into the other side and you flip the lid closed. This pushes the metal piece into both wires thus connecting them.

Re: Newbie Install Question

thanks for the info. Now about the KCE-300BT unit and possibly other add-ons that require connection to 12V power, where and how do i make these connections?

I was thinking, it is okay to crimp (or otherwise attach) ground and power wires from these addons (separate from HU) onto the corresponding wires on the HU harness?

depends on what you're wanting to add. most wires and fuses in the car are only sized for the original items the were hooked up too. if you go splicing into wires with high-demand components, you're likely to start blowing fuses or exceeding the wire capacities. in those situations, you need to run separate power wires from either the fuse box or the battery. both of which have been covered on this site numerous times if you search first.

Keeping in mind there isn't always one necessarily right or wrong way to do this or many things in the install world: I would tap into a wire by stripping it's body first using a side-style stripper, then I would take the wire you're attaching and strip it an inch using a stripper like this (or the side style one from above), and twist those wires up nice and tight. Next poke a hole in the wire you stripped using a pick tool or small screwdriver of some sort. Insert the attaching wire through the hole, tighten up the wire you're tapping into by pressing on it, and wrap the attaching wire around the stripped portion of the tapped wire. Once it's all wrapped up, run some electrical tape around the bad boy and throw a zip tie on for good measure if you'd like. If you want to also feel free to solder the connection before taping it. Solder is of course better but I think without it will be fine for parking brake, etc if the connection is done well.

Got a meter? That will be helpful.

So this 300BT is kind of a bitch. It's more the settings on the unit (IVA-D105) that are tough than anything. Make sure to read and follow the 300BT manual closely when you have to do the settings after the install.

You have to hook up the pink/black on the back of the in-dash to the pink/black Audio Interrupt Out on the 300BT.
Accy (red), 12V (yellow), Ground (black) on the 300BT could in theory go either to the radio harness (colors will match up) or the ignition harness (colors won't match up and they will be plenty fine current capability for the bluetooth) and then a metal ground for the black.

Just let me know what about that makes no sense so I can try to be more clear.
