Rep Power: 208 Just finished my custom trunk less than 150$
I just finished My trunk on Friday. it took me a good 10+ hours, working on my spare time, but I finally finished. I started because i got sick of carrying stuff in my back seats, and i could not fold the seats down, so i went from a huge waste of space at the back of my trunk, to two slightly less wastes of space on the sides. now i can fold my seats down and carry "long" stuff (golf clubs, hockey stick, snowboard) Also when I said 150$, that did not include the actual stereo electronics, that was in there before. I spent:
33$ on a sheet of 3/4" MDF [RONA]
22$ on 6m of felt [wal-mart]
20$ on hinges, screws, lock [ home hardware]
25$ on led light [wal-mart]
35$ on 2 11x15 sheets perforated stainless 22 ga [Arc-tec welding]
0$ on random scraps of 3/8" + 3/4"plywood for the middle part. [my dad's garage]
135$ total.
Check it out and tell me what you think.

Lighting looks like my trunk, but looks like you used LED's instead of CCFL's
Looks like it bumps.

Thanks guys. No i'm not really worried about the amp overheating, before it was sandwitched between the box and the back seats, I don't really see it being any worse.. and it's not chicken mesh. as to the DIY, i know, i should have, but I didn't even think about it until the sub boxes were finished and I had started felting them, by then it was almost too late. but I could provide a set of prints and a walk-through. I'll work on it. The construction was pretty simple, all you need is pretty much a table saw, a jig saw and a nail gun. Also the boxes should be almost exactly 1 cubic foot of airspace.

That looks good man. Nice way on making your own sub guards too.
Do the subs sound different firing sideways like that vs. front or rear?

I'm not really sure, it does sound a little different than before, slightly more quiet, but I did go from a ported enclosure to a sealed one, I'm pretty sure that is where my difference in sound is coming from. Good news though, I have a buddy who wants one of these setups, so I may be building another in the next few weeks, I will do up a DIY then.

this is the true beauty of doing a job yourself. for one, it is something to be proud of, but even more importantly, if you paid someone to do this for you, im willing to bet it would cost you upwards of 500. after looking at prices for sub boxes at worst buy, and realized that a plain box, that was smaller than what i needed, was over 150. I built my box for less than $30. Its hard for me to pay that much for something knowing how little it costs to make. looks real good man, although might be time to splurge on some speaker covers

Here are some quick drawings and dimensions of the boxes. I'm not sure how big the top is, because I just nailed it on then trimmed it afterwards with a router. also I would like to encourage you guys to use either lots of wood glue, or silicone to help seal all your joints. if the joints don't quite match up, it's OK, just whip up some bondo, and sand it how you want it. here are the pics.
Before you start, it is probably also a good idea to try a cardboard cutout first, to see if it will fit.
also check out this install, i saw this, and it is what inspired me to do mine, alough this guy did a way nicer job on his.

Great job man! personally not a big fan of the bent grill thing.... looks like you put so much time and effort into it all and gave up on the part that people see!

Nice, Is the whole trunk raised up? it kind of looks like it. Also, can you hide a spare tire in there?

man, great job, I've seen this done, but with fiberglass on the back instead of MDF. I really want to do this now.

Man, that looks really tight... did you have any problems? i tried doing somethign very simialar. i created a port hole in the box where the trunk rail would fit in, thinking i could kill two birds with one stone, when i finished it sounded like crap. Then i tried my hand at fiberglass, yea... that was sticky... You made it look easy, makes me want to try again...

if you have a table saw, it's pretty easy. if not: good luck to you.
I found it fairly quick. this is the first time i have built anything like this.
I spent more time designing the box than I did building it, you guys should have no trouble. The felt went on very easily also (the back looks like $%#@) but that doesn't really matter. Just start at the top and work your way down the front.
!!you need to cut out the hole for the sub before you construct the box!!
I actually just finished tuning my system last night. I was having problems with alternator whine on my highs. solved it by grounding to the trunk, and not just direct to battery.
