help with keyless entry
help with keyless entry
Hi all.
i'm a noob to cars so i need your expertise.
i got '01 civic dx-g 5spd. about 94,000km on it.
right now i don't have keyless entry but i want to install one.
some kits said if i have factory installed alarm then i need to buy a bypass module.
does my '01 dxg have a factory installed alarm? i don't think it does...
what keyless entry kits do you guys recommend me installing?
i do not want a remote starter, just keyless entry.
the kits come with installation instructions. i haven't bought a kit yet so i gotta ask this: do the instructions involve stripping wires, cutting panels or removing important parts of the car for access to some wires?
Thanks in advanced!!!

Not sure I can answer all of your questions, but I'll try and help out.
I don't think the DX has an alarm, I think the EX is the only 'vic that comes from the factory with an alarm. It's not very sensitive, by the way. If you want an alarm, Viper's the way to go. Kind of expensive, but good stuff. You get what you pay for.
And if you're going to install it yourself, yes, you're probably going to have to remove some panels and strip some wires. This may or may not be a problem for you. Me, I enjoy that stuff. I got bored and changed the lighting of my instrument panel.

most of the time it doesnt matter what brand of equipment you get, the value is all in the install. I dont recomend DIY'ing alarm and starter installs. Too much risk of causing major damage since your interfacing with your entire car's electrical system.
Keyless entry isnt a big deal, as long as you have power locks already. Your going to need to remove the underdash panels on the drivers side to access the alarm plug and ignition harness. Stripping wires will also be involved.

keyless and nothing else
i don't want an alarm.
but do i need it in order to get keyless entry?
all i want is keyless entry.. nothing else added. no alarms, no remote starters.
what are the only things i need to buy for my dx-g for this purpose?
i'm not too bad at following instructions on the kit manuals so installation isn't a problem.
do i need a bypass module or some kind of crud like that?
or do i only need that if i had an alarm to start off with?
i know my car does not have an alarm and i don't want one.
Thanks!

what the hell is a dx-g? dx's dont come with power doorlocks, so youll need to add actuators and a door lock actuator control relay. then any keyless entry system of your choice. if you need to ask these questions, you shouldnt be installing this stuff on your own. take it to a professional that offers life time warranty on installations. click the link in my sig to find a DIY i made 4 years ago.
well i'm not sure where you're from but in canada, there's a dx-g. which is a dx with power options.
so yes my dx does have power door locks.
maybe where you're from you don't get that luxury
.
installation instructions are easy to follow. i've done it many times before without knowing the background to most stuff.
so i guess i need a keyless entry kit for this to happen.
no bypass module needed since i don't have an alarm.
Thanks for the help guys.

Sounds like it's what you need. And Crutchfield's good people, they'll help you out if you've got any questions with the install.

keyless entry installations need the following:
+12v - a fused, positive constant voltage source
Gnd - a negative connection, any bare metal will do
IGN - sends a signal to the keyless entry unit that the car is on (this is used to deactivate the remotes and sometimes to enter programming modes)
lock/unlock - in the larger of 2 plugs in the kick panel, white w/blue stripe and white w/green stripe. these are negative. if your alarm doesnt already have a negative lock output, youll need relays to convert.
optional:
parking lights (+) - will flash as a visual confirmation of keyless operation
horn (-) - will honk as audible confirmation of keyless operation
starter - some keyless entry units have a starter disable feature. whatever system you get will provide you with the correct diagram to set this up.
all of these would have to be 'spliced' and preferrably soldered. shrink wrapped /taped. youll also need to find a place to tuck away your 'brain' and sometimes an external antenna, valet switch and LED (rare).
