Amp Smell....
What's up guys, I was bumping in my civic with my 2 10" Kicker L5s and RF 551S amp pretty loud when I started to smell a burning smell. I immediately turned the stereo off for about 2 minutes and then turned it on really low for about a minute, to see if it would work again. To my dismay, I couldn't hear the subs. I am fairly certain that it wasn't the subs because they can handle just about anything this amp throws at them, and its very unlikely that the amp blew both at the same time, but I am concerned about the amp. I had it on for about 10 seconds on a high setting, bumping pretty loud, when this happened. I have had the setup for about 9 months and everything has worked fine but now it won't turn on. Does neone know what is wrong with the amp? Oh, and if it is most likely "fried," could someone explain what that means as far as the internal components of the amp.
get a multimeter and meter your subs first. or if you don't know how borrow a friends box and connect to your amp and see if it plays. usually you will blow your subs before you fry an amp.
I'll check the amp fuse, didn't think bout that and when I use the "multimeter" (isn't that also called a voltmeter?) do I just check for the ability of the subs to transmit a current? thanks
set the meter to read resistance. depending on the meter, look for a symbol that looks like a horse shoe or omega, set to read up to 20 ohms, then put read probe on + speaker terminal and black probe on - terminal. should read close to what your subs are rated at. touch the two probes together first, the meter should beep(if it has that feature) that way you know you have it set right.
ive had that haha, youd be cruisin along, kickin the subs and then it stops.. you over heated the amp, your head unit still plays but no sound.. problem here.. the amp is probably behind your seat, in the trunk, the hot air from the amp heats the trunk and when your hittin the subs harder the amp works harder and creates more heat.. suddenly all the air in the trunk is warmer than in the cabin, what i did was lowered the 40 (of the 60/40) rear seat and drove around with my passenger window open to let air in there.
