Navigation Qustions
Navigation Qustions
Ok, before some of you begin to flame I must say that I have searched here for a while and have found some answers but it has been pretty choppy. SO PLEASE EXCUSE ME FOR COMING HERE AND POSTING SOME QUESTIONS THAT HAVE BEEN DISCUSSED, I AM JUST SHORT ON TIME.
I have a 02 Ex Coupe and I am looking to put a navi system. I want an in dahs touch screen that is in the actual dash and does have to come out and flip up(I hope you guys understand what I mean)
I have looked at several brands but can't decide.
First. If I buy a navi syste can I use the existing antenna connection for the navi? or do I need to buy a connect?
Second in reference to pioneeer, alpine, etc. do they make the piece for the civic coupe to have the system fit? B/c accorinding to cructhfield the avic-d3 is not a good choice for my car? That is one that I am looking into.
SO I am not sure if you guys could help, but anyone that has done this and can tell me more about it, what I shoudl do, what are the tops brands under 2k that I should consider, how hard is the install, any diys? and the things I need to know I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much in advance!

Sorry, but some of what you are saying is hard to understand.
Here is a picture of the NAV system I used to have in my Civic:
http://homepage.mac.com/mitul316/PhotoAlbum1.html
It's an Eclipse double din unit and I used the dash from a 2005 SE Civic becuase it has a nice big opening for the double din unit to fit in. I wouldn't see why the Pioneer version wouldn't fit. BTW, are we talking about the Pioneer D2 or N3, because I don't see a D3 on Crutchfield's website.
The unit should also come with everything you need, like a GPS antenna.
I hear that the Pioneer's are good, and I really liked my Eclipse. I don't know about the brands, never really looked into it (though I have used the Kenwood video stuff with NAV and hated it, so hard to use, its ridiculous).
I'm not sure if what I posted helps, but let me know if you need some more specific questions.

You are hard to understand, but I'm going to guess like Slick did and figure that you are looking for a double din.
As far as I know, Eclipse has two double din models (the higher model has a built in MP3 HDD) Kenwood has two double dins, and Pioneer has one double din.
All Navi headunits will require a navigation system antenea and extra wiring.
I shopped around, so I'll give you the main highlights I saw.
Pioneer:
Pros: Cheapest price, navigation is built into headunit (no extra boxes), awesome IPOD interface
Cons: Lots of people complain about the NAV interface, and it does not play movie DVD's.
Eclipse:
Pros: Built in navigation (no extra boxes) very nice interface (my favorite) plays movie DVD's
Cons: Neither models have IPOD support. High end model will hold MP3's, but you have to let each CD play end to end in your player in order for the headunit to store the songs. TOO SLOW for a person with hundreds of CD's.
Kenwood:
Pros: Supports IPOD (but the interface sucks, I learned that after buying it) plays DVD's, great sound ouput, and I think the Navi is not hard to use and works pretty good. Not sure what kind slick messed with, but mine is not hard. I like the Kenwood Navi a lot actually.
Cons: Navigation is in a separate box, lots of extra wires and most expensive. Does support IPOD, but the interface sucks.
If I would have known that the IPOD interface was not very good on the Kenwood, I would have gotten the Eclipse. I don't regret my purchase of the Kenwood, it's a good piece of equipment, but the sole reason why I bought it over the Eclipse was because it had native IPOD support.
BTW - Pioneers IPOD support kicks butt. Using an IPOD on a pioneer touch screen is great. They've made a very good interface, making it super easy to find what you want to hear, even in a mess of 10,000 songs. I actually never had any plans to upgrade my audio from stock until I started riding around with a friend who owns a Pioneer touch w/IPOD. The thing was so great in his car, thats the one thing that convinced me to upgrade. I figured Kenwoods interface would be just as good - but I was wrong. :/
Haha, I bet I just confused things a little more for ya, eh?

Sorry for any misunderstandings. I apprecaite all the replies you guys gave because they were really helpful.
Single din would be something like a heatunit like a radio? (i think)
I meant double din which is what you guys answered.
What I was talking about was really (don't know what it is called) the bracket that holds the navi in place when you put in your car. I don't know what that is called.
Either way do you guys think that for less than 2k I can get a navi that has navi(good one) and can play dvds?Oh and which Eclipse fits this description on the basis of price that I have already discussed? Also, where did you guys buy your navis? Ebay? Crutchfield?
How hard is this to install compared to a regular radio? DOn't you just plug in the harness to the factory harness, the antenna to the antenna run a cable from the navi to the antenna for the navi and play it on the dash, roof, wherever, and that's it? Or is there more to is?
The Eclipse I saw looks sick! So thanks for posting the picks
One more thing. How about security! I had one guy break in once after the hurricane down here and he took my headunit. Insurance paid for everything but you know how much of a pain that is. So with that said, is there something you can take off the navi when you are home at night that someone would not want to steal it or is it like a permanent thing?

The factory radio mount bracket works well to hold a double din. The dash of our vics is laid out very nicely IMO. It's more of an intelligent design than any other car I have owned. Lots of space in the dash for all the crazy cables and stuff you'll have to tuck away.
For a cover plate that you'd see in the car (but provides no actual support) I used the Metra face plate designed for two single dins and cut out the middle plastic bar. (there is a sticky for DIY in the ICE section that explains all this in detail).
2 out of the 3 Eclipses are under $2000 at Crutchfield. They are any authorized Eclipse dealer, which means that you will have a factory warrantee if you buy through them. I might be mistaken, but I think Crutchfield is the ONLY online store to be factory authorized for Eclipse.
For mine is more complicated than usual, but I have an extra box and wiring to deal with. I've never installed the Eclipse, but I would guess that it's pretty easy and similar to a regular deck. The extra cables I can think of are the GPS antenea, and the vehicle speed sensor wire. (go to the search button and search for all threads posted by "A03". I made a thread a few months ago about what wire is the VSS wire in the 7th gen).
Hard to stop thieves. Face stays on the radio. Make sure your insurance company has a copy of the recipts, and have the value added into your plan. Don't show it off too much and keep it parked in a safe place.
The rest is just up to how badly the crook wants to take it.
Before you buy, I advise that you go on the manufacturers websites and look up authorized dealers in your area for Eclipse. Go to a store that has one on display and make sure you are happy with it. I tried the Kenwood, Eclipse and Pioneer before I made my decision. I can't see why you wouldn't like the Eclipse, but always try-it-before-you-buy-it. GL.
