Long story short.....3 years ago, friend installs Clarion deck in my car.
Wire Harness adapter kit not available in store.
Friend cuts off OEM plug from harness and hotwires deck.
Clarion dies...Nooooo!
G.F gets me new JVC KD-G310 for Valentines Day...Yay!
Need to install...but no OEM plug on harness...Nooooo!
Futureshop/Bestbuy say they can install it anyway but will cost extra ($25)
I've been talking with Mega regarding this for awhile now and I think we've come to one of two conclusions..
1) hotwire the deck, not bothering with the plug
2) Get a plug from a wrecker (this proved to be retardedly expensive)
3) Get a universal plug (adapter)?
so is #3 even possible. Anyone ever run into this problem before?

why don't you just hotwire in the new deck? you can do it yourself its not hard seeing as everything is color coordinated, and clarion and JVC use the same colors White-front drivers, Grey-Front passenger, Purple-Rear drivers, Green-Rear passenger, Red-power, Yellow-Constant, Black-Ground, Blue-Remote. easy stuff just macth the colors up.

true enough, then I wouldn't have to test the OEM wires I guess.

yeah it will wire right into your exhisting wires that are there. Just wire them up to the clarion wires and cut off the clarion plug and you'll be fine. Thats what i used to do when people came in with hardwired sterios and wanted them replaced at audio express. As for best buyt chargeing more thats bullshit its the same as if you had the harness adapter, its not like they would have to do any traceing down of wires or anything.

sparknotes: matching the colors will the easiest, if you want to put the OEM deck back in later at some point, go to a stereo shop and buy a reverse harness.

When a customer comes in with a cut OEM harness we charge them 19.60 for a reverse harness which puts the OEM plug back into the equation and 20 in labor to hook it up. If the customer doesnt want to pay that we'll hardwire the aftermarket harness, but the lifetime guarantee on the labor goes out the door.

I have no plans to use the OEM deck anymore so I'm not too concerned. What I'm wondering is why they would charge me an extra $25 if all they have to do is color match the wires. It's not like going OEM wire to JVC where testing is required...this is simple color matching.

k well I went in to the shop to ask and they said they'll either...
1) wire in the harness that came with the deck ONLY for $30
or
2) wire in the harness and install the deck for $45

I was sitting in a line at a touchless car wash and trying to remember how to get the part of the dash out for the deck..on the '01 I think you just have to remove the 3 ***** and pull the panel out...I don't believe I put the lower bolts back in when I closed it up the first time...hehe

i got one better for you. take the trim ring off around the radio and use the keys from your new headunit to remove the radio from the cage. You can then bend the cage and remove it and not even have to worry about taking the whole pod out.

ok...ALL the wires match up on each harness.
Is it possible that the harness I have is universal meaning I can just plug it into my new deck and power up? I know this seems to easy but honestly...they're ALL the same!
The new deck has a 15amp fuse in the back of it and the harness already in my car has a 15 wired into it...don't think that's a problem though.

each manufactor has a different plug shape and pin out, so if your moving to a diff model of a same brand the harness can stay, but otherwise youll need to change it

ahh ok, thanks! they look exactly the same but I didn't check the pin out
Wow, this is really simple. No need to make it complicated, especially if you already had a Clarion in there. Take the two metal keys that came with the JVC deck. Pop them in on the sides of the Clarion. Pop that clarion out. Leave the Clarion harness in there for color reference. Wire up the new JVC harness with your choice of connections (Solder/barrell connectors). Put the new sleeve in. lock it down, and slide the new JVC in. BADA BING!
