I have mine routed to the little storage thing under the armrest, that cover that slides open and closed. I have it direct plugged into my Clarion DRZ9255. Sounds great even with 192kbps AAC files. I simply like that it will not only charge the iPod for you, but how you can use the stereo itself to go through your songs.

I have the Alpine iPod adapter routed through the steering column and out through the little change holder on the drivers side. The iPod fits perfectly in the tray, you just can't close it with it in there.
This has the remote attached..I recently removed it b/c I control it now mostly from the iPod directly which makes it moot. This is hardwired to my CDA-9811 and I also share the input with my Sirius radio - the cradle is just above it...
