Wiring CD Player in Home....??
Wiring CD Player in Home....??
OK let's say I'm bored and have an extra cd player hanging around. How would I hook this thing up in the house, garage, etc? Obviously I would need to step down to 12 volts but how would I hook up the rest of the wires? How do they do it at the car audio places?
You dont need a harness...Just cut the harness that comes off the cd player. Then just hardwire the speakers. Positive wire connects to the red plug on the speaker and negative connects to the black plug. Make the passenger side be the right channel and the driver side be the left channel and then use the rears for surround sound. Connect positive and negative into the power supply and walla a in home car stereo. If you dont know what wires do what check out installdr.com for the wiring code.

I hooked up an old Sony garbage HU to my worktable. Bought a transformer at radio shack that can can handle 7 amps and turns 120 volts to 12volts dc.
as you can see in the last pic, i put a switch for the ignition wire, so i turn off the HU without deleting the memory (time, channel, etc....).

the transformer has a positive and a negative, connect the negative to the ground wire on the HU, connect the yellow wire to the positive and take a piece of wire and go from the positive also and connect the other end to a switch, then to the other end of the switch, connect the red ignition wire. As for your the speakers, take the 8 speaker wires (white, grey, green and purple) and connect it to some speakers.

05reverb, that's probably the coolest thing i have ever seen on this site... i am SO going to radio shack to get that transformer tomorrow... now i have something to do with those 15"s i have in the garage... pics soon!
05 reverb....first off you RULE and thanks for answering me. I didn't think anyone would have actually done it. BUT, your directions got a little fuzzy. See if I got this right:
1) Take the transformer negative (-) to the HU negative (ground)(-)
2) Take the HU yellow to the transformer positive (+)
3) Take the transformer postive (+) and hook it to a switch?
(any switch or a circuit breaker?)
4) Hook the blue and white stripe from the HU to the switch?
Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks again!!

No sorry, i meant the red wire to the switch instead of the blue with with strip, sorry just didn't think when typing, and any switch will do, the red ignition wire doesn't draw much current, other than that everything was correct.

So, let's see. I only use 3 wires from the head-unit? Ground, Yellow, and Red? LOL.....maybe you should email me the diagram to be safe.

if you always keep the transformer on, and only use the switch to turn off the HU, the memory will remain, but if you plan on turning the transformer off everytime your done using it, u might as well not put a switch at all, just connect the red wire at the same place as the yellow wire instead of through the switch, but u will loose the memory (time, channels, settings)
