Sub/Amp problem
Okay I've got the kenwood KAC-929s 1000watt amp. powering a 12" Infinity 1220watt sub.
It was all working fine, then, one day it just stops working, now the sub still plays but it's kind of scratchy and it can't hit the low notes and the amp protection circuit keeps cutting in with the really deep bass.
I've checked all the wires and everythings looking fine..
did I blow the Sub? it's rated at 300 watts with a peak of 1200 watts
my amp is bridged and buts out 460 watts with a max of 1000 watts.
it's a long shot but it's the only thing I can think of... anyone got a clue what went wrong?

hmmmm you may have blown the sub. Nice to see someone else from edmonton. you should goto the Canada west forum. There's lots goin on there with a few of us edmontonians. We're even starting a car club! Anyhow. If you bought your sub from futureshop, i suggest you go back there and bitch. I know they carry both your amp and that sub. heheh, my new setup from them is actually decent. I picked up an MTX 8000 12" for 200 bucks. I think they have another one and it can hack the power your amp puts out (I'm feeding mine 500rms from a Phoenix Gold).

I was hoping to avoid dealing with futureshop as much as possible.......somehow I doubt that they will be all that helpful....
I'm still curious if it should be even possible for me to blow the sub, if it can handle a max of 1200 watts surely it should be able to take 460 watts for an extended period of time. or is the 300 watt nominal rating a guideline carved in stone?
If the sub is blown I'd like to know the math before i buy a new sub, that way i'll know if I have to find one with a nominal rating well above the 460 watts my amp puts out.

Yea, i already had my MTX 8000 Replaced by futureshop, and I've had it for umm 3 days now i think. They replaced it with little resistance. haha, might have been because i just bought it the day before, but you can usually push em around a bit.

okay I managed to get futureshop to take my sub back........... which means i've pretty much nuetered my system...
I'm looking for a 12" sub (so I don't have to build another box), that can handle 460 watt RMS, 1000 watt peak.
With a good mixture of quality and pound.
Money isn't really an issue.
Any suggestions?
so far I've looked at the:
MTx 8000
Orion XTRpro 12
Infinity Perfect 12.1
Phoenix Gold XMAX 12

Depends on how much money you want to spend. Look into a nice JL W6 300rms, W7 750, Rockford Power HX2 150-1000rms, or maybe some L7's 350rms. All will cost you over 200 if you shop around you can get an excellent deal.
That MTX8000 for $200 sounds like a great deal. those are supposed to be great subs and I know it can take the power. The RF Power HX2's are nice. that's what I am getting. they can definitely take the power.

I'm leaning heavily toward either the Infinity or the IDMAX.
It's next to impossible to find any local place which carries the IDMAX...
I have store credit at futureshop, which i would like to use, but they have no clue when they'll be ordering in new Infinity's...
When i asked about IDMAX I just got a long pause and a blank stare.....I think I need to find some better stores.....

yea. I don't know where to get IDMAX in this province either. but they cost about 800 a sub. just so you know. Also. Did you check for MTX 8000s at the Futureshop on Calgary Trail. they might have one for 200 bucks. they did last week.
You might not have blown the sub. The same thing happen to me. My sub was working fine, but stopped. I thought I blown the sub but the amp was faulty. I had my boyfriend tested the sub it was fine, he tested the amp and the crossover burned out. So we got it replaced and it was bumpin again. Although if your speaker has a really high distorting noise when in use with a good amp then your sub is probably blown. Sorry.

Well I got impulsive and tracked down an Infinity Perfect at a futureshop across town ( they literally pulled it off the truck for me).
My system is back and running fine, although I'm only powering the sub at 1/2 of what it could take....
i might update the amp one day, but right now I'm saving for a Honda CRX......then I'll need a system for it too...........
thanks for all the help everyone.

yea, i thought they had perfects at the Edmonton South location? they did when i was last there. but good for you. those are great. I'm returning this MTX, and selling my amp. then i'll go systemless till i can afford an IDMAX, for 800, plus a Phoenix Gold 1000watt Class D amp for it!
BTW, how are you underdriving the Perfect? don't you have like 460RMS? if your going by the 1400 watt number that's the max output. That's how you blew your last sub isn't it?

I spent a couple hours with the install guys, (I wanted them to check my install to see if I screwed up anything, before I put another sub in)
Apparently the south built a demo vehicle, where they were running 1000 watts each into 2 perfects and had no problems...the trick was just making sure that the box was perfectly air tight and measured exactly to keep the cone from overextending itself and heating up.
Of course everything is half power to some of those install guys, unless glass is shattering and your ears are bleeding.

hmm sounds good to me. anyhow. off topic now. are you ever going to come meet with any of us 2k1 owners in Edmonton (Asianpride, Damian2k1, Blown, Dret, Myself, and a few others). We get together somewhat often now (well at least Asianpride, Damian, and I do), and we are even in the process of starting up a car club. Just come down to Canada West, and post a thread.
