Official 6"x9" Thread
I've scanned the archives for speakers, if this was attempted earlier and I just reposted then I'm sorry, but I thought it might be best to keep a "registry" of 6"x9"s that people have placed in their cars. With tight tolerances in the trunk, it might be nice to know what will fit, so when an installer says "I don't think this will fit" you'll know if it actually does, and if its EZ, tight, or requires some modifications.....
If you have a custom set of speakers, please list
Year, Coupe/Sedan, Trim Level
Speaker Brand and Model Name and/or Number
How well does it fit? If you modded it, how hard/what was involved?
Example:
2001 Coupe EX
Junkbrand Spank MDS-22s
Fits bad, I had to remove the rear window to install, but the speakers give +4 hp and +3 ft/lbs!

Pioneer 4-ways
The install was easy, I had CC do it for me. They popped them in from the top. The magnets scrap a tad on the torsion bars in the trunk but thats life.
I had them on an amp and they put out a lot of volume. Honestly though they killed the soundstage so I don't have them on anymore. Voice is stricktly from my Diamond 6.5" M6 components. It isn't worth the effort to take them out.

2004 Coupe EX
MB Quart DTC 169 6x9's
The MB Quarts have a thick rubber ring around the speaker, so the Rear Deck Panel had to be trimmed with a Dremmel. Basically on the underside of the panel there is a like .5" lip that goes around the each speaker, so that had to be diced off else the rear panel wouldn't snap back into place. But once that is done, screwing into the deck is a pain because of the MbQuarts ring around the speaker. But they fit nicely and cause no interference with any other parts!

Alpine SPX-F13M
Perfect fit with one 0.75" spacer
Before:
Alpine SPX-F17M, tight fit, front 3 clips on the door panel don't snap in properly. 2 spacers required for depth clearance. Same on Alpine SPX-177A.

anyone know if the "Alpine SPR-694A" 6x9 speakers fit perfect for the rears on the coupes without any special mod or using spacers? searched an old thread that djspot created and seems like ppl say u have to mod or else it'll hit the torsion bar while some said they fit directly.
for those who owned these speakers, help a 7thgen brother out

I've got Rockford Fosgate FRC4269's in mine. Mounting holes on basket didn't match up, so I had to use a dremel to widen the holes, and also carve out some space on the hard plastic ring that covers the edges of the surround material, then I used a washer under the factory screws. They're good enough speakers to jam with, but only have the woofer and one tweeter, so...
Wow this thread doesn't really help much. I have tried 2 different 6x9's speakers far and both didnt fit. The problem is that they hit the torsion bars or the back deck when I space them. Some people said the Kappa's 693.1i fit. Someone said that an Alpine type R fit but somewhow I dont believe that it will fit without modification. Anyone else know of some speakers that will fit out of the box??

It appears (haven't tried it) you can raise the speakers with adapters (or layers of sound deadening material) up to 1/2" without hitting the grills, and even further if you shave the grills.

i have the kappa 692.5i two ways and the basket is huge...
Some pics of my recent install
I FINALLY got these in. They are Kenwood KFC6979ie 3-ways (although they have two tweeters for a total of 4 speakers...wierd
)
Anyway, they are supposed to be 3 1/16" speakers. I snapped a few shots of them with the trunk down. There is about 1/8" between the springs and the mags, and they don't touch in opening/closing the trunk. The speakers are installed (with 3 bolts) on 65mil Raammat, which I suspect added about 1/32" with the screw pressure.
(BTW: 02 EX coupe)

Some highlights:
1. The oem bolts were 5mm. Unfortunately, I had to replace them with new bolts, since my socket was too big for the openings around the screw holes on the speaker's frame. I bought 5mm 1" socket cap screws from home depot, so I could use an Alan wrench. I still ended up not installing the rear-most screw.
2. The rear deck is a real pisser! Worst I've ever worked on. It was nice to finally clean the bottom of the rear window and the third taillight. For some reason, the side panels didn't go back on right, but I think they either have gotten a little warped sitting in a pile in my car or the larger frame on the 6x9's is keeping the deck from sitting correctly, even though all 7 clips engaged.
