Budget System!

hi guys! im looking for a budget system for my girl's 91 ls400. about half of her speakers are blown. i wanted to replace all of her speakers. can someone reccomend me some decent speakers. shes not an audiophile, neither am i. she doesnt really want to spend too much money. im guessing around 200-300 bucks. i found a wiring diagram.

so can anyone point me to a decent brand?

alpine Type S or Infinity Reference: component front speakers (to replace the woofer/tweeter and adding a crossover) and 2 or 3 way rears. With installation would be just under $400 at retail cost. So look for deals online and take it to a reputable shop or DIY.

JL Audio VR Coaxial speakers. They're great budget speakers. A set up front and out back would do wonders. They'll keep most of the midbass that you/she enjoyed in the stock speakers, much better then most component speakers do actually, being as most components crossovers don't let them go as low as lots would like. The JL VR's will give you a full, rich sound. But, if she has tweeter pods somewhere in the door, you might want to find some grilles to go in there for filler, to give the appearance that there is a speaker there, unless you can find a replacment for the panel the pod is in.

Find an amp to power the JL's. Something around 45 watts per channel is plenty. JBL offers some good budget amps.

The only thing is, you can find JL stuff online, but the only problem is JL doesn't allow online sales, so whatever you buy probably won't have a warranty, unless is's a shop and you can talk them into providing you with a reciept showing you bought them in store.

LowSky is an unknown quantity at this point
i just checked crutchfield.com and they actually say to call them directly becuase no normal speakers will fit for the LS400 but if you go to any shop they will tell you they can make almost anything fit but it will cost extra

component speakers will cost about 300- 400 with install if you buy them at a shop.

if your tweeters are fine just get some cheap replacements like pioneers or alpines... anything sounds better than stock

I have personally worked on a 91 ls400 before, I installed Infinity components, and quite honestly for the money sounded really nice. They may not be as flashy as JL speakers, but they dont need an amp to give you good results. Adding an amp, even a low power one, will certainly bring the price up beyond $3-400 range since you have to pay for additional wiring and labor, not to mention the actual amp.

It's all a matter of opinion. If you're talking about $400 including the install, save yourself some money, and DIY the install. It'll save you about 75-100 depending on labor rates in your area. Another thing you can do is to only replace the front fill (front speakers). The rear speakers are really fo rear seat passengers. If you do decide to replace both front and rear, get a smaller amp, and run the rear off the deck. That'll save you money. You can also put in a cheaper speaker in the rear. Find something that's midbass only(no tweeter), or a cheaper co-ax. You could use Adire Koda's, but they are power hungry and would sound like crap ran off the deck.

up front:

http://cgi.ebay.com/JL-Audio-VR650-C...QQcmdZViewItem

for the back a pair of these:

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshow...number=264-832

if they are 6x9's back there, TB has you covered:

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshow...number=264-836

thats $205 so far plus shipping. say $20 to ship. thats $225.

take to any shop, they will charge you about $35 per pair of speakers.

thats $295 out the door to put 6.5 VR coaxes up front, and tangband subwoofers in the back.

you wont need amplifiers, you wont need a subwoofer, you wont need to do anything fancy. no new wires, no cutting anything.

a passive crossover for the back would be a good idea, and cost you about $5 at fry's. total. we can talk about that if you decide this route.

its not gonna be anything thatll block rock, and you wont be winning any SQ competitions. but itll be a decent daily driver, noone here will be able to recommend anything else that will give you better bass response without doubling your cost, and my budget covers a shop installing everything, you dont have to lift a finger.

the reason I chose each speaker:

I wanted to give her something midbassy up front. ever read those threads "I put aftermarket speakers in my car, and my stocks had more bass!"? well, they are buying spekaers made by pioneer, infinity, kenwood, CDT classics, other speakers that are famous for not playing low. midranges, but no midbass. the JL VR speaker line boasts an impressive low frequency extension without a big price tag like the XR line, or CDT HD's, or Kodas, or sets using a 7" midrange, etc.

I chose the rears because you wont find either a 6.5 or a 6x9 that can play that low. only the JL w0 comes to mind in the 6.5 inch variety. and if you can find them for a deal, buy them. but those wont be able to play as high as the tangs. the tangs can play up to about 250, the JL's are gonna be acting a bit wierd considering no enclosure, so its anyones guess. nowhere near 250 Hz.

anyways, that explains the LFE, which will let the rears act like little subwoofers in her car without needing an amp or box or lots of space, etc. there is also a top end, though. she will still get to take part in the idea of a sound stage, since all her midrange and highs will still be located exclusively up front.

to be honest, infinity reference coaxials all round will cost about as much and be a ton louder. but itll be all midrange and all highs, very bright and poppy, with about as much bass performance as wet spaghetti. but again, itll be louder overall......

what I am recommending will be more on the mellow side, laid back highs, with some bass thatll kick when you want it, but not be so overbearing or cost an arm and a leg. especially with the car running on the freeway.

i would stick to alpine or infinity personally, cause i dont like anything else in that price range.
right now im running eclipse speakers but might switch to high end infinity's some day. depends on money flow.
