Is Dynamat hood liner worth it?
Is Dynamat hood liner worth it?
I've done a search on this but didn't find anything, so please excuse me if this has already been discussed. I was wondering if anyone has installed a Dynamat (or other brand) hood liner in the engine compartment in order to reduce engine noise. How much of a difference will this make? I've just installed a new Clarion head unit and Infinity speakers on my '05 EX sedan which made a huge improvement, but I'd like to reduce the engine and road noise. I'm already planning to add dynamat to the doors and rear shelf. Any constructive input would be appreciated. Thanks.

On a similar note- I used to own a 1990 Toyota Camry, and after getting it into an accident the only replacement hood I could find came from a higher model of Camry and had the hood liner. I noticed an immediate difference, and could hear my stereo a lot better. The engine noise was muffled significantly.
I would say that you should do it, whether or nto you get any feedback on this thread, and then let us know how it goes.

ya especially if you have a moonroof, its still gonna be noisy. I got alot more road noise removing all the floor carpet. Doors are also a place for noise to get in. I'm going for lighter car weight, so I don't care about noise anymore. If you really want to reduce the noise and notice it, get better tires like bridgestone turanza.

I'd be inclined to say the firewall in the engine compartment as most of them offer a reflective backing that is supposed to reflect the sound to an extent, however, it'd be difficult to get everything. Deadening under the carpet would probably be your best bet as it's easier, and the tar will absorb a lot of the sound coming into the cabin. It wouldn't be as hard to get everywhere as it would be to get everywhere from inside the engine compartment. Both should offer lots of reduction results as far as sound goes. Mass loading is what you're wanting to do. The more mass you add the more deadening you'd get. I would however say you might want to spray a coat or two of rubberized undercoating inside the engine bay as it's cheap but will significantly offer results in killing noise.

Something like Jute is what he's describing. It's fibers further dissipate teh sound waves. Or carpet padding, but it doesn't do as much because it's not as dense. You're wanting to slow the sound waves to a point that isn't audible to human hearing. The deadening mat willl, the majority of the time, do that well. Just could be added to further dissipate teh waves.

Thanks for all the responses, I really appreciate the help. I think I'll go ahead and do the dynamat hoodliner as well as deadening the doors. If I'm still not satisfied with the results, I may go ahead and deaden the floor as well. I'll report back in a couple of weeks with the results. Thanks again!
I finally installed that hoodliner.
Well true to my word, I'm reporting back with the results of my sound deadening efforts. The Dynamat hoodliner did wonders in reducing engine noise. But the most dramatic change was when I had Dynamat Original applied to all four doors (yes, I paid someone else to do it). The road noise was reduced dramatically. My Civic is now just as quiet as my wife's Camry!
The results have been so good that I now have no need to deaden the floor or firewall.

DO IT! lol. I've just added the mat to doors and back, amazing now. I like the sound of my intake though..that extra 2.0993439 hp, sucks, all the mat in my car makes it go 10x slower lol.
