are my speakers way too underpowered??
are my speakers way too underpowered??
ok, i know they are bad for speakers bcus - i could b wrong - overpowering...well logically speaking, ur givin the speakers too much power and underpowering has sumthin to do with distortion which willll eventually **** up ur speakers.
now, my question is what is an acceptable gap up & down btween ur speakers rms and power sources (h.u or amp) rms?? like say i have speakers with 80 rms would i need to power them 75-85 rms for the speakers to not b over/underpowered??
to b more specific with the stuff i got, ive got these speakers all-round
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1099388425823
which r 35 rms & r running off a sony xplod h.u (its 45w peakx4 so i assume itll only b about 15ish rmsx4)
from that info ive got a 20ish rms gap (speakers=35rms, h.u=15rms), are my speakers way too underpowered??. im gettn a new h.u but even then it (the new h.u) will only put out 20-27 rms (20-27 rms as i havnt decided on wat h.u to get)
i AM gettn a sub+amp which should solve everything but that'll b muccccch later. jus wonderin so i know for future references & also for WHEN i get the sub+amp, if i should leave n have any speakers running off my h.u or the amp

as long as your sending a clean, unclipped signal to your speakers, they can take alot more power than the rating. The power rating on speakers is actually the amount of of DC power the voice coil can take before the varnish melts. Audio signals are an AC signal, so the rating doesnt really corelate that well. As long as the signals clean, dont worry about it

if you got speakers that can handle up to 80watts RMS and 220w peak find an amp that does just about that... if the amp is rated much higher you wont be able to turn the volume up to much without blowing the speakers. it's as simple as that.
i had a friend who actually made his tweeters melt because he had too many watts going to them. the crossovers didn't look so good either when they came out too.
