I've always heard and believed alpine is the best when it comes to cd decks, but I never understood why until I got one just now.
My first deck was a low end kenwood that did the job okay, but it was hard to make the music sound good with just bass/mid/treble frequencies.
Well then I moved on and as my interior changed to blue, I found a perfect match with the pioneer 940mp, one of their highest end decks that cost me around $540. It had everything from 13 band fully adjustable eq, to x-overs, advanced sound stage, imaging, bbe/octaver, time alignment, and tons more. I tried my best with the eq and got it to sound pretty good. At this point, i've gone from two subs, to one, to just speakers with a small alpine amp (30wrmsx4 at 14.4v). The pioneer was probably the best looking display I would ever see.
Then my dash changed to red and I was forced to upgrade again. I wanted something that would sound and look decent. Well I did alot of searching and finally found an alpine cda-9847, one of their lower end units. I picked it up for $200 at best buy. It has a white lcd display and red/green illunimation for the buttons. It matches an 03+ coupe dash almost perfectly. The only complaint is that it doesn't look as white when viewed from the side, but thats an lcd issue. On an rsx with angled deck, it would be perfect. Anyway, I installed it, has to splice and connect a bunch of wires again, you know the drill. Well I get it working and start to think...how many weeks is it gonna take to make this sound the way I want.
Well I put a cd in and wow it already sounded okay. It has a simple bass/treble adjustment, so I turned up the bass to +4 and treble down -4 and omg it sounded perfect! The sound is so much richer than anything I've heard before. And it took maybe a day to get it sounding right. Every song I put on is excellent and there is no harsh sounding tones. I can turn it up more and more and the sound keeps getting better. The radio reception is awesome. I thought it was a problem with the antenna, but actually its the tuner. It sounds like a cd. I could go on forever, but I'll just list a few features that I like on the alpine. First, the volume fades in to full gradually when the deck is turned on. Buttons are very easy to use and simple to understand. I also like the file search, where you can scroll through every mp3 while the current song still plays.
Also I noticed that my tweeters (running off deck power), are about 2x louder than with the pioneer. Its shocking how a low-end, cheap deck has so much. And it looks very expensive as well. I realize now what people mean when they say alpine is the best. You have to hear it to believe, because it really is a whole new sound.

I had an Alpine, low end unit, and I htought it was really nice. I had a Clarion too, it skipped all the time, (Ohio roads are horrible for bumps).
Got some alpine equip, mrv-540 amp, two sets of type r components, and cda 9815 head unit. I have had it for a couple years now and the system sounds great, only problem i have had is one button on the head unit stoppped working. I am pretty sure its cause condensation forms all around my head unit and water drips on it.

oh yea forgot to mention i have an alpine amp too, the mpr-f240. what does it mean about being bass engine compatible? it says both deck and amp have it?
I'm not really going to get into how I feel about alpine into too much detail.. their product isn't horrible but IMO, I don't think it's great. I used to have two Alpine M-300s. Each amp was rated at 300 watts @ 2ohms @ 14.4v. I measured and I was only getting about 200 at 2ohms @ 14.4v. With my JL amps, I'm actually getting the full rating

Alpine amps are great amps, but if you really want power, go with rockford fosgate amps. I just ordered an f1 three way system from alpine and will be powering it with three fosgate t3002, one on every channel since it will be active.

i have a few friends with alpine.... the decks are good
amps wise... my friend had a problem with overheating (replaced 3 times all pro installed...finallly 4th worled like a charm)
i'm surprised no one mentioned that the stock honda radio is built by alpine
