Sub and amp combo

So i'm pretty new to car audio and such (not new, just lack the experience). I want to get one 12" Alpine Type-R to fill my music a bit. I'll be getting this from Best Buy since I get my brother's employee discount So I'll save like 60% on the sub itself. Now I need to also get an amp from best buy too and I'm not sure which one to get. I was thinking about the Alpine MRD-M605 which puts out 250W at 4-ohms. So since this is a 4 ohm sub, it would be getting 250 watts continuously? Would this be a good amp to get or is there something better? It also comes down to what I'll be saving from the discount so I'll have to find out about it. Thanks for any help.

Here's the link to best buy's mono amps:

Okay, the Type R sub your looking at is dual 4 ohms, so when you wiring you sub your going to wire it with both +'s connected running to your amp and both -'s running to your - side of the amp making the sub run at a 2ohm load, the amp will run at 400 watts @ 2 ohms. Problem solved. *cough* REP ME *cough*

Forgot about the DVC... So I can look at the 2 ohm rating of the amp. So just so I know for future reference, if it was the svc type-e, it would be running at 4 ohms?

The sub would be running a load of 4 ohms, so you would need to run the amp at 4 ohms. You always want the sub and amp to match ohms.

What would happen if you use 1 12" sub that is 500W RMS @ 4ohms, and have a amp thats 500W RMS @ 2ohms? Is it a HUGE difference? How does the ohms effect the performance of the sub?

It's off topic, but do you have any idea what discount employees get on those nice Alpine in dash DVD headunits? They have one model at my local store, which I've played with a few times while shopping for other stuff. It was touch screen, easy to use and had a really pretty display. hehe. May have been $1500-1800.

Might be worth getting a part time job, like 10 hours a week or somthing just to buy your electronics you want, then quit after you get em. hehe

I would check ebay too, usually they have some pretty good deals, I'm getting the Pioneer AVIC-N2 for $1000 and $150 installation fee, but the guy i deal with is giving me a big deal, cause i spend alot my money at his place, my trunk should be done next week. If he didn't get it for me that cheap i would definatly go to ebay. That is what the dealer is getting them for. So he is breaking even with the install.

can anyone help me with my question, because I plan on getting this sub/amp combo soon. But would like to know if it will effect performance greatly if its only 2 ohms instead of 4? Can anyone help me out?

I haven't been into car audio lately, but in my younger days I was quite heavy into it - atleast as far as I could afford.

To answer your question most simply - yes it will change performance greatly.

Typically, dropping impedence in half will double the amount of current the amplifier will be able to flow through speaker, potentially increasing the output. It works the amplifier harder, but as long as you have a clean input signal, the amp is stable at 2ohms (which almost all of them are) and most importantly, the gains and levels are set correctly as to not overdrive the amp or the amps powersupply.. you'll be golden.

it will be unstable though, when you running 1 thing at 4 ohms and another at 2 ohms. I would get the same if you haven't bought the stuff yet. Who is selling this to you? Tell them they are selling the wrong items together.

Im buying seperatly on my own. Im buying one (1) 12" alpine 12 SWR-1242D type-R sub which is 500w RMS @ 4ohms. Then I plan on buying a sony xplod-SD51X that is 500w RMS @ 2ohms and 250w RMS @ 4 ohms. I was just wondering if the 500w RMS @ 2ohms would be enough for that 1 12" alpine sub? I know people always bash sony, but I've used their sub and amp for about 2-3 yrs (till my car broken into ) and have had no problems what so ever. I've also always gotten compliments on the way my bass hits, so i dont see any problem with them. Thanks for the help again!

Don't buy the sony explod amp if you don' have to, there not a quality brand. I would get an alpine to go along with it. Don't run an amp at 2 ohms and a sub that is 4 ohms together. That is spelling bad news. Thats why they have different ohm independences. Get the sub and get an amp that is 500w @4 ohms. Not 2.

Thanks for the help, but why do people bash on sony? I've used nothing but sony amps to power my infiniti kappa's and sony amps/sub in my car and have had NO problems what so ever. They work perfectly, and honestly sound GREAT. I have not been into a car that has had a better SOUNDING quality than mine. Sure, it might be louder, but sound quality could not compare to mine. A lot of other drivers would always compliment my sound system (even though it isnt much), but they were all powered by sony. So, i really have no problem with them, i actually recommend them. Anyway, if I get a sub thats 500w RMS @ 2 ohms, im guessing that sony amp would go with it since its 500w RMS @ 2 ohms?

exactly, match the ohms, make sure when you wire the sub its wired down to the 2 ohms. Is it a dual voice coil? Sony really hasn't impressed me with there brand, I stick with MB Quart, Kicker, JL, Alpine. But go with works best for you man, thats why they make different brands. Hope everything works out.

thanks for the help. Yes, It is a dual voicecoil. I pulled this info out right from crutchfields website.

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 4-ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel with each other, the woofer presents a 2-ohm mono load. When the voice coils are wired in series with each other, the woofer presents an 8-ohm mono load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 2-ohm load.

Power Handling: This woofer has a total RMS power rating of 500 watts and a total peak power rating of 1500 watts. Each voice coil carries an RMS power rating of 250 watts and a peak power rating of 750 watts.

actually yes, just one more. I found a sony amp that is 500 watts RMS x 1 bridged output at 4 ohms (4-ohm stable in bridged mode). So would that work with that 1 12" alpine sub which is rated 500w rms @ 4ohms?

Yep, that will work. As long as it says it stays stable at the ohm it will work.

because with the spiffs aka money sony gives you in the form of a credit card to sale their stuff i matched my hourly pay check pushing sony. b4 the spiff i never sold one piece of sony unless someone had to have it. after the spiff program its all i pushed if price was an issue. sony is garbage. you want to buy from a company that know where theyre going and puts all their money into what you are buying. not have it be an off shoot of a larger company. xplod is only around so sony can make more money. unlike say alpine, jl, boston ac those companies are around to make the best equipment they can. and turn a profit.
